Omega General Help / Re: Removing rear hub Questions.
« on: 21 August 2021, 17:50:08 »
Hi all thanks for all the info.

Bearing arrived today and I was surprised to see the pack has two Circlips. I had presumed once inserted the bearing would sit against a shoulder with a retaining circlip to hold it in.
Am I mistaken is there a circlip back and front of the bearing?
Also they really are the biggest circlips that I have seen. Any recommendations on heavy duty but reasonably inexpensive pliers to suit?

Regards,

Graham.

yes thankyou. easily done.

I am considering that, at the moment. Apparently the backing plates are now very rare, so if I can get the splines undone on the backing plate (i have the bit, but I'm not sure if the holder will fit through the hole in the hub) If I can get it off, I'll probably give it a clean down and try and preserve it a bit.

Hi all,

No offers as yet, has anyone got one that they could dig out? I would very much appreciate it.

Would also consider a complete trailing arm for a saloon, ideally nearside.

I've tried some of the breakers but there are very few near me and all of those are estates!

Many thanks

Graham.

Response to Nick-
Just to be clear, when inserting the bearing you say pull against the inner race? Why not drive in the bearing, pulling on the outer race?
Pulling on the inner aren't you risking pushing the bearing apart? bear in mind the hub is not out yet and I haven't seen a bearing in my hand yet!
I can't see why not so am concerned I haven't got the whole picture. This may be a daft question!

Graham

Thanks LC, I hadn't found that article. I guess I better order a wheel bearing then!

Omega General Help / Removing rear hub Questions.
« on: 18 August 2021, 11:02:13 »

I need to remove a Omega 2.6 saloon rear hub to have it machined or possibly replace it. I have most of it apart, but i am a little unclear about how to get it out.
I have searched the forum, but i am not clear about how to go about it. I tried to hammer it out from the rear with a soft faced mallet, but it's not moving.
First, I understand that the Driveshaft flange pulls off. could I span the flange with a bar, bolt it too the flange and use a centre bolt to push against the rear of the hub. (The main hub nut is off) Will this be enough to pull it and not risk cracking the flange? I also have a 3 arm puller that could be used to similar effect.
Could this action alone be enough to ping out the hub?
re the hub, I've seen the tool on my searches that bolts into the backplate holes and pushes the Hub out. Obviously I need to pull the Drive flange before this can work.
Finally, I have no rear bearing problems at the moment but I understand when the hub pops out it could end up with part of the bearing stuck on it. Is a new bearing inevitable then?
If it comes out without the bearing, would it be possible to re-use the existing bearing.
I have another post in this section, I am looking for a rear hub, if you have one for sale?
Thanks.
Graham.

Following a cross threaded wheel bolt, I now need another Rear hub. Not sure if there are any differences, but the vehicle is a late 2.6 saloon with vented rear discs.
Sadly, the garage that cross threaded it whilst changing tyres are not going to be trusted again, at least not by me.
If anyone has got a hub in their spares stash that could be for sale, that would be great.

thanks,

Graham..

Thanks Nick & Doc,

Good idea to give them the rods, it will only take them minutes.

I would very much like to use somewhere nearer, but I'm not confident of finding someone local who will do a proper job. Having owned 3 Omega's I have first hand experience of what they can be like. The first one was perfect, the second a blancmange and my third, despite completely new suspension, somewhere between the two. My current tyres though still legal are feathering in nicely. I have a set of 17" elite wheels and new rubber to go on as soon as I have the geometry sorted.
I have asked at a few places and they all talk a good job but I'm not so sure. At one one of them I discretely watched a young kid doing a tracking adjustment. The kit look good enough to fly to the moon and the operator finished with the settings all in the green but a bit sloppy I thought. I actually heard him say near enough. I don't really want near enough.
The other positive thing about WIM is that there is a really nice pub hotel in the middle of Amersham old town. We stayed last year and I think I might give it another try.

Omega General Help / Wheels in motion Full Geometry questions.
« on: 08 July 2021, 18:50:40 »
Hi all,

I will shortly visit WIM to get the full Geo set-up that was originally planned last year but didn't happen, for obvious reasons.
I'm trying to anticipate any issues with regard to the adjusters coming undone. I've tried to loosen up the track control arms, but they are seized solid. I have bought a pair of genuine new arm assemblies for both sides, so i can swap them out before I go. The pinch bolts at the hub are recently new from when I changed the struts, so they should be OK. The Steering idler arm had no play at the last MOT, but might it be worth changing? Is it straightforward to DIY?
Finally, I understand there are also adjustments at the rear, but I can't think where they are. What do I need to look for?

Final question, should I just leave it to WIM and presume with hook or by crook they will be able to sort it. Big hammer, heat, whatever. The guy told me (Tony I think) they charge by adjustments required and (last Sept) the maximum it could be was £139. When he quoted me, I didn't know about the OOF discount, so hopefully that might come down a bit as it was a bit more than I was expecting.

Regards,

Graham.

An update from very sunny Shropshire.

So much easier than I expected. Engine and box was on a pallet and I had access to get a socket on to the bolts without moving it an inch. Dumb luck works in your favour just once in a while. Bit of a fiddle getting the bolts lined up as they seem to be in a place you can get a socket on for only a very few degrees of rotation. I only needed to go around twice, so not too bad really.

Cheers,

Graham.

Thanks for all of the replies.

Outside work planned for the weekend, no rain forecast, who'd have believed it?

Hi,

Assembly is out of the car already thankfully.

My concern is getting to the bolts from underneath. I imagine I'll have to lift it using the crane and I'm worried about dropping it on my head!

However, the point really is that I don't want to risk damaging it. As you say both engine and gearbox are fairly heavy and unwieldy. I think I will remove the gearbox and TC as one unit.
Looking at the manual, there appears to be an access door to get at the bolts and another hole to stick a screwdriver in to stop the plate revolving when your undoing the bolts. Not sure if the Starter is in the way, but when I get out to it i should be able to work it out.

Regards,

Graham.

Omega General Help / Splitting Engine and Auto box (Out of car)
« on: 10 June 2021, 14:45:52 »
I'm planning on splitting an Omega V6 engine and gearbox this weekend and despite reading the manual I'm not sure if I can split them without removing the bolts connecting the torque convertor to the flywheel. It looks as if I can, as the Torque convertor does not seem attached to the gearbox directly. Once apart I plan to remove the TC. Have I got this right?
Regards,

Graham.
