Omega General Help / Re: Caravan Mass
« on: 26 March 2021, 12:01:13 »
Hello,

I have some experience of towing (mostly caravans) with 3 different Omega's. One 2.5 and a pair of 2.6's.

My initial response to your question is, I would think carefully.

The reasoning for this is the quoted rating is a combination of vehicle weight, power, gearing, brakes and the safety regulations in force at the time the assessment was made. Although looking at the 2.5 Vs 2.6 many of those parameters will be the same or very similar, not all are. It is confusing, but the published data is the published data. This is what would be referred to in the event of an incident.
My last point is nothing to do with the law, as such, but seems to me to be based on a degree of reasonable common sense. Here in the UK we have an organisation called the Caravan Club. In my opinion, they are exceedingly up their own arses in most respects. They recommend to not exceed 80% of the towing car mass in your choice of trailer (or caravan). Based on experience of towing various rigs, some of which did not conform to the Caravan Club recommendations, for stability and towing comfort I think they are right on this point. Of course, many people exceed this and have done so for many years. The curb weight of a typical Omega is around 1600Kg+-
1875 is a fair bit heavier than that. We have a phrase, the "tail wagging the dog"
Whatever you decide to do, good luck in your travels.
Graham.

Omega General Help / Re: Fitting towbar to Omega
« on: 14 March 2021, 16:19:46 »
Hello,
Having fitted a Towbar to my Last facelift Omega, I would offer the following advice.
When you have the towbar look on the manufacturers website as I was able to download a free set of fitting instructions.
As said above the boot floor is dimpled where the holes need to be drilled through.
Before you bolt through the boot floor, ensure you remove the sound deadening mastic from beneath the penny washers. (the washers are part of the towbar fitting kit) The instructions ram this point home, other wise the mastic will depress over time/temperature and the fixings will get loose. I'd rather not personally.
I got a second hand towbar and the washers were domed and encrusted with mastic, so the original fitter obviously handn't bothered.
I did mine on my drive, it wasn't particularly difficult, so go for it!
Regards,

Graham.

Hello and welcome to the OOF.

Graham.

Hi all,

I'm after a genuine Irmscher grill for a facelift Omega. Don't mind if the "i" is not present.

Anyone got anything?

Regards,

Graham.

Omega General Help / Re: Late model powersounder wanted
« on: 14 November 2020, 15:20:43 »
Thanks Nick,

I'll give that a try.

Although I didn't do what you suggest exactly, i've changed wiper arms many times on other cars and never had a problem before.
Perhaps I was being a little too careful.

Thanks

Update:

Power sounder outed

Spent 90 minutes trying to remove the wipers and in the process cracked part of what was a mint scuttle. That was particularly annoying.

I've had a look on ebay and there are a number of inexpensive wiper arm removal tools. Has anyone purchased one that they could recommend as reasonably effective on an Omega?
I would like to repair the scuttle at some point.

I have got a selection of 3 point pullers, but they are much too bulky to be of any use here.

I have since found out that it is possible to remove the Powersounder with the Scuttle in place, but it is tight. It is easy enough to undo the 10mm securing nut (pull out the big grommet) and push the sounder backwards till it drops out of the slot. I couldn't get it out from under the scuttle though however I jiggled it. Eventually I undid the bracket (two 10mm nuts) which blocks its exit.
This then fell to the bottom and on retrieving it realised the horns were attached to that too. Managed to fish out the sounder, make safe the connector and replace the bracket.
Not quite before my tea on Thursday Doc, but before my lunch Friday. I know now that it can't pop.

Interestingly, once removed I could see the date code on the sounder was 1/11/2011 and made in Australia?

Although I am generally cursed with the urge to do a "proper job" knowing that my 17 year old car has already got through at least two, made the decision to take it out and leave it out an easy one. It is an unnecessary risk.

Cheers,

Graham.

Mods Please Move

My Mig (2003 V6) is doing the 4 beeps of powersounder death.

Having personally completely renewed the suspension and brakes on all four corners, should it burst into flames just now I think I might just cry. (Sorry)

Has anyone got one available off a late facelift available for sale.
I searched on here and can't find any indication that there are different ones fitted to facelifts, but if anyone can confirm if there are.
I am handy with a soldering iron, so if anyone has more than one spare, perhaps we could do a trade? I trust a suitable battery should be available somewhere.

Regards,

Graham.

Omega General Help / strut to steering knuckle bolts
« on: 19 October 2020, 18:54:12 »
I've just changed the struts on my Omega and re-used the existing nuts and bolts as they were in good condition.
On reflection, I've decided I am going to renew them and have WIM pop them in when I have the full set up done. Doing very little mileage at present, so I think they should be OK for a bit.

However, looking at a parts catalogue the bolts seem to be two different sizes, M12 and M14?? I only put them in yesterday and i am fairly sure they are the same size?

If they are different, they certainly went in the holes without difficulty. surely, I couldn't have been that lucky. Perhaps the smaller bolt goes in the lower oval hole to provide more room to adjust for camber.

Am I going mad.

Omega General Help / How to swap front seat squabs?
« on: 16 October 2020, 16:56:25 »
I'd like to swap the front seat squabs in my car around, pass to driver and VV.
Nick W mentioned this was quite easy anyone care to do a "how to"
Although the drivers seat base is in fairly good condition, the passenger one is mint and is more supportive.

Presumably there is a need to disconnect the heaters.
Any issues with the airbags?

Any thoughts much appreciated.

Regards,

Graham.

Welcome back.
Maybe its time to pick up another Mig :D

73
TheBoy,

That's exactly right, particularly on the smaller sizes it looks like they are all one piece.

74
Hi Nick,

Thanks for that.

Like a lot of things, it's very easy when you know.
It looked to me like the central pin snapped off on fitment, a bit like a standard rivet. But nooo.

Graham.

75
I've removed my wheel arch liner and broken some of the clips.
They are a plastic expanding rivet kind of thing. various options available on ebay, need to check sizes.
How are they fitted- is there a special tool, can I replace them without it?

Graham.
