Windows 10 updated. Now cant use smileys.
« on: 31 August 2019, 21:28:58 »

MS has been pestering me to install a Windows 10 update for a while, so last night I did. It took ages to install, so presumably a big update.
Since then, I cant access smileys on this or any other forum I use. I click on them but nothing happens.
Anyone know why ?

Use one of the iPads you have lying around, much easier.

Bought a new M$ Surface 6 on Monday. Was offered a free 'personalisation' of it in the Oxford street shop. I asked if they could upgrade it from Windows10 to Win2K of at a push Win7. They said no  >:( So I left.

Spent most of Tuesday using DISM to remove all the Bloatware. Then Tuesday night I allowed it to do the update. Didn't realise it was a full OS update till Wednesday morning. Even MORE bloatware, including all the stuff I'd uninstalled the day before. Not impressed. Finally got rid of Cortana sometime Thursday. Forcing it to use IE11 instead of Edge, and getting rid of Bing is also a game. Seriously considering installing a firewall to block access to M$ websites.

Indeed, this is an Edge problem with Windows 10 1903. No plans to fix, as Edge in its current form is dead.

Use IE instead, problem 100% solved on OOF.

What are you, our IT department? Next you'll be telling me to disable all the security features, too, or use a VM of Windows 7 with IE 8...  :P

As well you know, Internet Exploder (and Edge) are some of the most secure browsers for Windows out there ;).  But then you are perfectly capable of making a reasoned choice.

But for the less literate PC users here, IE11 on Win 7/8/10 works well on OOF :).

They are until the thing running in them requires you turn all the security features off and install a specific version JRE.. (I'm looking at you, Siebel!) That's before we get to the things that require us to run Flash (I'm looking at you, ADP eTime!). Of course, the new "cross platform" versions are "coming soon" - and have been since 2012.. ;D ;D

I reckon for most of them, "cross platform" essentially means HTML5 based.  And browser support for that can best be described as not-quite-there.

But you mentioning Siebel sent a shiver. I'd manage to blank those traumas, now I don't have to touch them.
