Laptop problem?
« on: 06 June 2021, 14:31:17 »

Computer will not start or run.

Ran a diagnostic which suggested that the Hard Drive short DST check had failed.

F*ucked?......or an easy fix?

depends how easy it is to remove the hard drive
which depend on the make and model
ideal opportunity to fit a solid state drive IF it's easy to get at .
you will also need a bootable USB flash drive with the latest windows 10 (21H1 is just out)
free to download from microsoft and should activate by digital licence if you previously had a genuine copy of windows 10 before  :-\

How hard did she hit you with it? A small bump on the head with no blood means it should be repairable. However, if there was a loss of consciousness, no matter how short, or copious amounts of blood, I would suggest either the initial impact or ingress of blood into the keyboard probably means it's had it.

I was thinking that if the case isn't cracked, bending it back the other way might fix it :D

I was wondering how far it flew before it hit him?  ???  That might have a bearing on it's repairability.  :-\                                                            ;D

Depending on what the drive is doing, you maybe able to recover data from it. If you need stuff back, my best advice is to do as little as possible with the drive. Preferably, do nothing with it. If you need help with recovery, let me know, I know a little  ::)

YouTube will show you how to remove the HDD for most makes and models. You can decide if it's something you wish to try.

As said above, if you don't need as much space, get an SSD. It will breathe new life into an older machine. Depending on how old, may mean that it's a good time to upgrade.

Oh if you do decide to strip it down and it's more than a couple of screws, I take a piece of paper, mark a fixed point on it, such as battery location. I then draw a circle roughly where every screw is and then tape the screw to the paper as I removed it. If you need to strip even further, then take another piece of paper and repeat for the next layer. My record is 4 pieces of paper, I literally had to take everything out of the case to get to the HDD.

Ordered this last night with Amazon Prime, at 9PM. It arrived at about 10AM this morning and is now up and running.  :y

Could have got HDD for about half the price, but a couple of members have mentioned the advantages of SSD, so I pushed the boat out.

I've got a few of those "crucial BX 500" SSDs now £30 for the 240 GB ones ,which is plenty for our computers

though I imagine you have lots of "home made movies " that take up space  :D

Only issue with Crucial SSDs is the warranty hassle.  They can be quite difficult to deal with.

I think our Lordship will be unlucky to break one though, unless he's caught 6 inches into his SIL....
