Was reading the newsletter that i get from my insurance broker and saw this. Didn't realise that the rules regarding the plates comes into force this month, which tightens up the rules regarding spacing, fancy scripts and any other weird and wonderful things that people have on their plates. This is to make it easier for ANPR to read them. Must say that it.s about time. Could be a £1000 fine if you are deemed to have an illegal plate.  Anyone else aware of this?

Doesn't that only apply from vehicles registered after a specific date?

Saw one today..THE TJ. Thought that can't be right, when I got nearer it was T11 ETJ, with a black screw over between the ones.

From the MOT guidance manual.....

"You do not need to check:

the supplier’s name
postcode
BS number
logos or emblems outside the minimum margin around the registration number"

defects .....
(a) Number plate missing or so insecure that it is likely to fall off =   Major
(b) Number plate inscription missing or illegible =   Major
(c) Number plate showing an incorrect registration=    Major
(d) Number plate does not conform to the specified requirements =    Major

"specified requirements" to do with spacing, font etc have been in force for a long time
so unless you have fancy 3D effect plates, wrong font  ,incorrect spacing etc 
 then you don't need to rush out and buy a new set of British Standard BS AU 145e plates

I thought it had always been illegal and wondered how people got away with it. I followed a VW yesterday with a plate that spelled OAKSIE (OAK 51E). The 5 had blatantly been changed to an S and there was no space at all, it was just one word and stood out like a sore thumb.
My mates motorbike used to have a micro plate on but he still had room for 'Don't bother, you'll lose' under the lettering, which on a 200mph bike is a fair statement.   
The Police didn't like the size of the plate or his little message.

The owners of these vehicles just put the legal version of the number plate on when they go for an MOT.

Unfortunately the Police are too busy with work they shouldn't be doing to have time to police the roads these days in my opinion.

 then you don't need to rush out and buy a new set of British Standard BS AU 145e plates

.....Unless you plan going abroad in the car after 28th Sept, when you need to change the GB to UK on your number plates because of that muppet Boris.

i imagine you can get very high quality stickers off Ebay for 99p delivered

Exactly this. It's amazing how many people just happen to have a legal set in the boot "that came with the car". "Really? The previous owner was also called Ron Knob was he?"

Have had " cherished registration marks" on our vehicles since 1987 without any problems whatsoever, that's because they are legitimate numbers & not the "doctored" type that cause problems because they are illegible. Have bought & sold many numbers over the years & wish I'd kept some of them as prices of good ones have soared.

Last three cars have had previous advisories for delamination plates, and all have been replaced with 3D style plates. Current ones don't have the blue strip on the end either but would simply stick a GB sticker on the back window if it were to go abroad.

They were purchased as road legal though as the background is plane and the font is compliant. Certainly, the Dartford Crossing ANPR has no issues reading them

A guy who used to work for me had two tickets issued in quick succession on his Merc for the private plate. He'd made some variation on 'Judge' ( his surname) starting with J11 and one black screw.

Both were off mobile speed vans - and he wasn't speeding when he went through them.

Needless to say he changed it after that.
