Bottom is old English for the floor of a valley.


My example also includes one of the many English words for a group of trees - hurst - and Snodda is supposedly a Viking name.


So it's Snod's wooded valley. There's Snodland on the other side of the river.

Coombe or Combe, is another old English word for valley, maybe specifically West Country/Devon?  The Welsh version is of course Cym, sounding similar.  ;)

Examples round here are Holcombe, Rocombe, Harcombe and Coombe Street.  :)

Indeed. Although coombe is also used here in Kent and Sussex


Holcombe is the address of the school I went to. That's different, because it's where the wife of the site's original owner came from.


Then we end up with slightly daft names like Hurstwood, which means wood-wood. Probably coined by some plank....
