They must have had a thing about body parts and functions down here Ron. 

Bottom is old English for the floor of a valley.


My example also includes one of the many English words for a group of trees - hurst - and Snodda is supposedly a Viking name.


So it's Snod's wooded valley. There's Snodland on the other side of the river.

Coombe or Combe, is another old English word for valley, maybe specifically West Country/Devon?  The Welsh version is of course Cym, sounding similar. 

Examples round here are Holcombe, Rocombe, Harcombe and Coombe Street.

Indeed. Although coombe is also used here in Kent and Sussex


Holcombe is the address of the school I went to. That's different, because it's where the wife of the site's original owner came from.


Then we end up with slightly daft names like Hurstwood, which means wood-wood. Probably coined by some plank....
