Oil pressure low
« on: 29 November 2021, 12:25:47 »

Got the dreaded 'oil pressure low-stop engine' this morning, booked in to local garage tomorrow. More expense before Christmas for a poor pensioner.  :(

Apparently it's a thing on these engines, oil pick up seal. Only does it when it's freezing cold and only for 5-10 seconds. Thinner oil for the winter might cure it.
Car owes me nowt. Paid £8000 for it 4 years and 70,000 miles ago. I'd just prefer to keep it going until second hand prices settle down.

If I do have to go looking for another, I'll post nothing on here till I've bought it  ;D
That way you can all rip it to shreds but I don't have to listen to hundreds of suggestions.  ::)

It was Very cold this morning which makes the oil thick
Also very common for the oil pressure switch to read wrong or even split rubber inside, spewing half the oil out the engine  :(
new switch is only £10 ish
hope you get it sorted cheaply Uncle Stemo

Is that the 2.0CDTi engine that Vauxhall have fitted for the past decade or so?  I thought aside from occasionally injector issues (and DMFs on manuals), that was pretty reliable motor?

Temperature will be up around 10°C in the morning, so it will probably be fine. But, as winter is upon us, I will take it up and see what they say. I do a lot of miles and I don't want to end up on top of the M62 over Christmas. It gets chilly up there.

It is, and it's never missed a beat, but where oil pressure is involved, I'm taking no chances.

He was of the same opinion as you, Dave, and didn't flush it. Got it home already, I'll wait for the next cold morning and see what happens.
I really should have a word with myself. As I said, this car owes me nowt and, if it went bang, I really couldn't complain too much.

If I get another 12 months out of it, it will be £70 well spent. It won't last forever. I was looking at the trader last night and, when the time comes, I might have a go at bangernomics. Some decent high milers out there for not much money.
This one is clean, with a 12 month MOT and, if you got a year out of it, it would be worth the money. I know people who've bought cars like this and have complained years later that they're fed up with it but can't break the fickin thing  ;D

probably too late but I'd advise against a flush
oil and filter change yes after a 710 pressure light scare  :y
He was of the same opinion as you, Dave, and didn't flush it. Got it home already, I'll wait for the next cold morning and see what happens.
I really should have a word with myself. As I said, this car owes me nowt and, if it went bang, I really couldn't complain too much.

you may have dodged a bullet there Uncle Stemo  :-X
hats off to the garage too  :)
many garages love selling engine flushes etc
You mean putting it on the invoice but not actually doing it?  ;D

That's a main dealer bonus fiddle: if you sell a product but don't use it, the company gets the money even if it's only a tenner. But your department quarterly profit percentage improves because you've just made a 100% profit on an item instead of the normal 10%(or whatever it might be). That makes every one in your department almost as happy as the parts department, because profitability is a vital part of the bonus calculations. They are happier because they can make that profit several times over until some idiot actually usesthe product :y

Probably last 5 years or more. :y

You said you wouldn't discuss your next car until you had it on your drive.

Forgotten already?... ::) ::) :P

I can't complain about my 2004 Volvo V70.   :)

I paid £900 for it nearly 3 years /40,000 miles ago and I doubt I've spent more than £400 on it which includes a set of tyres. (Rainsports)  :y

Found a garage in Keighley that do the oil pickup seal for a very reasonable price, so I'll be heading there when I get the time. Still getting the warning on cold mornings.
