ACTUAL IMPORTANT ADVICE
« on: 01 April 2022, 20:42:39 »

***ACTUALLY IMPORTANT***

A few weeks ago I posted about how my grinder disc exploded and nearly took my head off. At the time I put it down to me being a cack handed moron (still true) or having used an older disc.

I've just opened a new box of cutting doscs that I bought from Aldi in recent weeks. The outer box says BBE May 23... But the discs wrapped up inside are BBE Sept 21 (!!!)

For the love of God if you have any Ferrex discs (or I'd imagine the same tyoe from Lidl as they stock similar in the aisle of unnecessary expense)... CHECK THE DATES. The thicker grinding and cutting doscs habe the same but I'm less worried about them doing an Oddjob on me.

Rest assured I've already contacted Aldi to make a fuss and hopefully issue a recall before some poor sod comes a cropper.

I've used cutting discs from time to time, a good while ago now, but I had no idea about 'use by' dates. Perhaps this should be better publicised.

I only know about dates on discs because of being told so at work, but I've discs at home that are that old there are no dates on them.

In my experience they do. Only problems I ever had , when I used to grind metal for a living, was when the speed rating of the disc was much lower than the tool it was mounted on.
Seen serious injuries caused by that, due to a very incompetent manager.

Ever seen a moron fit a 9" disc to a 5" grinder? There are better ways to get a manicure as it wears down to size. Although it will never have a suitable speed rating.

If the cut item, usually metal, is not supported correctly, the cut will close up, resulting in the edges nipping the cutting disc; in the worse cases causing the disc to shatter and chunks fly off taking your head off. This also unnecessarily tightens the centre spindle lock making it virtually impossible to slacken even using a longer key, resulting in more brutal methods of removal and damage to the locking pin.
I don't know whether the method of storage has an aging effect on cutting discs, but I keep mine in a dry environment.
Didn't know about the 'use by' or 'best before' dates though.
I have always bought what I consider to be better quality / well known branded discs - 'cheap shop' discs for little money are false economy imho in both quality and durability. Cheap discs don't last two minutes.

Usually use Tyrolit cutting discs after a few of those cheapy ones popped on me. Yes I was wearing safety gogglies but was just wondering if a part of it had impaled itself in my jugular!
