Hey All

My laptop keeps telling me its time to renew my licence for Norton antivirus.
I purchsed for me and also for the wifes lptops a year ago to protect me from the naughty and evil predators of the internet.

5 days to go before i am unprotected  

Do i renew Norton, or buy something else.....OR is there anything i can download ( cheaper but as effective) from the internet...?

I think i need a firewall and whatever else stops me getting viruses

If it's just a virus protector you want, try AVG.
Best thing is that it's free.
They also do a firewall but I have never tried that and I think it costs.
Norton let far too much stuff through before and since switching ti AVG I've had no trouble at all ....... so far.

You won't be unprotected as such, you won't get any more updates.
Agree that AVG is best free one available, I've had it for years with no probs.
Zone alarm do a free firewall (amongst others), it just doesn't have all the functions of the full version.
Personally I'd get rid of Norton, slows the system down.

No infringement intended Jamie   sorry if i have given the wrong signals - i dont want any pirated or dodgy downloads - my laptop is too valuable to mess about with...

dont know mch about software and my tech guys at work advised theres lots of good stuff to considor instead of off the shelf norton & McAfee. They did mention avg....will have a gander when i get home  :-/

To protect you need in order of importance:

Common sense
Windows patching - Use Windows Update or other methods regularly
AntiVirus - Update daily
Firewall
Malware - run regular if not on access...


I personally have a system that does my Windows patching daily, AV (I use Mcafee) daily.

I run the freeware Ad-Aware weekly

I use firewall in my router, and not any specific firewall other than XP one on my machines. Software firewalls give a false sense of security...

I, too, use AVG and Zone Alarm and Ad-Aware. There was a worm in one of my temp internet folders, AVG found it and quarantined it almost immediately it was down loaded

I use BT/Yahoo broadband and get free virus protection using that.

However I might look into AVG as I use Windows Server on my luggable at home and the BT stuff won't execute on it.

Ive lost faith in Norton, had several virusus it hasnt known about.
I use AVG and norton at the moment (until subscription runs out).

Also look at kaspersky anti virus (http://www.kaspersky.com) , thats meant to be good, and there is a 30 day free trial so you can see if you like it.


I also run anti spyware frequently - adaware (http://www.lavasoft.de)

All helps keep a nice clean system.

AVG free edition.
Used it for over 2 years. Updated daily.

Wouldnt use anything else.

I use EZ Antivirus as recommended by the security centre - free for a year with free upgrades during that time.
