One for the Geeks?
« on: 18 October 2006, 12:05:26 »

I've had this little program running on my PC for some time now.
It's from SETI (Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence) & IIRC they record information on radio telescopes & analyse the data looking for signs life somewhere out there.
But there's so much of it they'll never be able to analyse it all, so if you join up; they send you small chunks of info which your PC analyses & sends back.
It hardly uses any resources & I can't tell that it's running in the background.
If you're interested; their homepage is here & their's more information here. Who knows; if they do find life out there one day; you could get the credit for analysing the information.

Right; I'm off to get a life!  :D

There are quite a few similar programs out there

'distributed computing' is the techy name

Some are more 'worthwhile' than others

I use one looking to cure cancer

Well the Omega Owners distributed computing team has been created.

If you want to join in, download and install the software from above, if you are not already using it,
then follow the link below to join 'our' team

If this idea takes off, I think maybe we could get a sticky in the welcome section with the software and team link.

I can't leave my computer on, and I have a monthly data limit on my broadband.

With SETI; it downloads data in 2.5 - 3 MB chunks & works on it in the background, you don't need to be connected whilst it does this. When it's finished it sends the data back & downloads the next lot.
Not sure about the other one.

It's not about being connected, it's the data transfer.  I hate downloading Windows updates.  I pay for the broadband, not Microsoft.
