Which OBD2??

For those of us who don't have buckets of spare cash to buy a genuine Tech2  :y  , but were prepared to spend a few quid to get a code reader etc. which diagnostics software is best, and which OBD2 / PC interface is best?

For engine only, www.scantool.net (though buy hardware elsewhere).  For all onboard Vx systems, do a search here on cheapo tech2 lead.  Buggy software, but may be better for you. It tends to crash a lot, and need a proper COM port, not USB/Serial adapters...

The software I had seen was Digimoto 4.03 http://www.digimoto.com and seems reasonably priced, but there OBD2 interface thing seems expensive. Although $149 for the complete package doesn't sound too bad?

Does anyone know if this software is any good?

Yes. From what i have read, most of the stuff these things reads are generic anyway though, or have i misunderstood?

Yes, most readers are generic, but tend to only do Engine.

The cheapo tech2 lead is around £30 from ebay, and will do most onboard systems such as gearbox, ABS, climate, MID, Steering etc etc

(Due to buggy software, it does seem to be unreliable with some systems, and some it will not talk to at all)...

I think its probably due version of firmware, the cheapo tech2 lead used to be able to read my gearbox ecu, since it was changed and presumably firmware was updated to latest version, it carnt anymore  :(

So its going to be a bit hit and miss which ecu's it can read.....but should deffo be able to read engine ecu

When I borrowed Markjay's it wouldn't read my g/box on my 1998 MV6

If your going to get the cheapo tech2 I would  pay a bit extra and get the usb version

Best I've seen it for £40.00

Most laptop don't have a serial port - and the serial version of the cheapo tech 2  does not like
usb to serial converters [iffy at best]

Not sure the usb very works with the cheapo Tech2 software though....

Just spoke to the guy selling the Cheapo Opel Tech 11 -USB  version says it works with the software, I will find out as I bought one.


He also said  if you use the serial version with a USB to serial converter and get problems
he has found you need to go into device manager and  set the comm port the converter uses to comm port 1 [note any change don't take effect until you reboot]
I not able to test this as I dont have the serial version?

setting usb2com adapter to com1 was how i fixed it, but others have had less success.

I'd be interested to know what software they supply ;)

I bought one from Talt2mycar on Ebay - with virtual USB as described above.  Even downloaded the drivers from US as software provided on mini disc wouldn't work.

Eventually sent it back & seller advised that it is the most tempremental item he sells and works with some cars but not all and there is no way to tell which one.  Full refund given with no trouble.

Without the VCI card, the software card, or lead, its not much use....
