I would like to fit a camera outside and connect it to my PC. Is this fairly simple? Any recommendations?

Wired?  Wireless?  Dedicated Recorder?  Ability to see it via Web?  Ability to see it on home TV?

So many options out there Shackeng.

Whay would be your ideal set-up?  What sort of money were you looking to spend and were you intending to install it yourself?

Hoping to install it myself, just a simple camera, and connected to my PC. Hoping not to pay more than £200 -£300, less if possible.

Sorry, but you still haven't given the full brief.

For £200 you'd get a lot of kit.

How do you want to connect to your PC?  Wired?  Wireless?  Will the camera be anywhere near the PC?

Are daytime images more important, or focus on night time?  Do you want to be able to remotely move the camera?  Would you like it to alert you when it picks up movement?

Vield of vision?  Are you focusing on a particular spot (a car, or garage door for example)?  Do you want to cover a large area?  Whats the focal range?  20metres, 100metres?




Basically - We need more information.

For that sort of money, get a dedicated cctv recorder, independent of PC, so you have a month's worth of recordings unaffected by reboots etc.

Most have PC/Phone remote viewers.

Shame, we binned a couple with a shit load of IR cameras a few weeks ago

Field of vision 120 degrees if possible. Just general focus on a garden pond, to find when and how the herons and cats steal my fish. Range is only 30' max.,

i have some of their equipment.

before that i did have , which is probably after, a pc card which slotted in the back of the desktop with software supplied to do what your after.

Chucking a loose cable for feed and power doesnt have to be pretty.

Forget linking it to a PC with that budget, stand alone unit would come with multiple cameras at that price. Easily view from PC or mobile apps

OK.  You could do things cheaper than my suggestion (below) but it becomes complicated and messy with dedicated recorders etc.

There is a relatively new Samsung product out which has a camera and a WiFi box/MicroSD recorder.  It's small, neat, and the camera is of excellent quality.  128degree viewing angle, 50' Night Vision, Alerts for when something actually happens etc etc etc.

The best bit is, you can select three diferent areas of the capture area in the software.  It will only notify you, or indeed start recording when it senses movement in any of these pre-selected areas. (of course, it can notify/record for the full capture area too).

Also that Motorola one is indoor only, so no good for you. 

It would have worked with an Android device though
