If I cut my privet hedge right back to the stems and branches will it regenerate and become a nice green hedge again? 

I know if you cut leylandii type hedges back too much they don't grow back and look like a horrible mess. 

Laurel hedges on the other hand are very forgiving and will grow back quickly after a severe hair cut. 

What about privet?

if you want it to grow back faster then water and feed it

It will grow back this year if you do it tonight
get the clippers out   
train and trim it as it grows , probably plenty of youtubes on it

Definitely will grow back had one at our previous house & really cut it back drastically, but it grew back fine.

I much prefer the way women look after themselves in 2022.

Both laurel and privet are relatively slow-growing. So cut in back harshly by all means but you won't have much privacy for quite some time.
