According to my "local" BBC Southampton News, the port has plenty of electric hook-ups for ships to power them in port, but none of them do, as its cheaper to run their onboard generators instead.

There is no 'standard' for shore supplies (what a surprise!) due to different voltages and frequencies of the ships and local setup.

Consequently most can only couple up in their home ports, and unless they are there for a a longer period its not worth the faff and hassles of a shore supply (its not some stonking great big plug, it is physical wiring bolted to a bus bar and big switch). The only ones I have seen use them in anger is naval vessels and some drill ships as they have home ports.

Modern car wiring has been hit by the greenies.

The adhesive in the cloth tape is now 'organic' so attracts the little buggers (and bigger ones) so the loom manufacturers have had to put chemical nasties in the glue to detract them......so probably not nearly as 'organic' as it was

As the sun started to come up this morning, I put the space saver on the back of hers, and dropped the wheel I took off to my grumpy MOT man to remove the screw...

That was a nice birthday present for her  ;D

Emissions for ships does not apply in international waters for most of the planet, so they tend to be clean(ish) in territorial waters, then switch over to any old cheap crap when outside.

When I was at GE delivering vessel control and propulsion systems, it was quite an eye opener as to the lengths the vessel designers went to to make this all happen, extra tanks, extra pumps, fuel heaters, different engine/governor/avr mappings etc etc.

They have at least introduced ballast water cleaning systems to try to stop the carrying of invasive species around the planet (some of which were even massive power consuming microwave setups)

I found it amusing when one of the Greek officials said that the British Museum only want to keep them for ticket money..........it's free entry!

Most of our cars end up as complete runners in far off lands of questionable ethics (Africa and the 'Stans being the usuals), we have also seen Ukraine cars arriving in central Russia in recent years.

This change closes a back door which allows a key to be programmed once in the car

On the rare occasions I do stick religiously to the limit, there's always an angry queue behind. People are used to driving 5-8mph over the limit, and it really pisses them off when others don't.

Go to Wales, stick to the 20mph limit and see how you get on!  ;D

Having been recently, you struggle to see 20 in a 20 and seem to constantly be close to 20 even in a 30 or higher  ???

Not convinced they are stainless, the coating looks to be zinc, they also state Surface Treatment: Primary Color + Zinc Plated White Blue Color and why would you zinc coat stainless ???

General Car Chat / Re: Breakdown cover
« on: 10 November 2023, 10:53:08 »

If your vehicle is covered by the manufacturer's warranty, then most jobs are going to be a simple return to whatever dealer is nearest. The contractor who collects your car has nothing to do with the courtesy replacement. Actually, that's not quite accurate; the courtesy replacement procedure often doesn't start until your car is removed!

This is not correct, we for instance have specific training and JLR diag kit in the recovery agents hands, its not unusual to get a software update and valid repair at the roadside. They also get priority cars from the dealers for recovered vehicles, I would say the manufacturers cover can be breakdown cover ++  :y

When I was a nipper, Aylesbury was full of them, all called Spaz Mobiles. All in that blue shade as well.

I would bring them back (well a modern version), Motability is a very abused privilege these days

« on: 06 November 2023, 13:11:15 »
DDR timings are pretty irrelevant, the interface timings adapt to the fitted modules to ensure the skews etc are correct for the part.

That can be either via an eeprom on the memory part or via the processor carrying out a ram learn when it sees a new device fitted.
