Automatic gearbox misbehaving
« on: 29 September 2020, 15:32:15 »

On my Winter Omega that I'm about to take out now on October 1st I did an oil change in the Auto gearbox.

Oil didn't look bad and smelled as good as it can. Changed the filter too.

Now when I drive the car it behaves strangely. When standing still and I start the gear box free wheeling a few seconds and then hook up. In worst cases with a big tugg and muffled clonk sound. It didn't do this before the oil change. Oil level is OK.

I have used Valvoline ATF Dexron III.

I haven't driven it for a long run yet, just a few laps around the block. Engine is up to temperature. When it starts running it shifts OK and kick-down works.

If I put it in 1st gear it works as expected. The free wheeling is only in Drive.

What could have happened???

Thanks

Level checked with engine running?

No, no engine running.
Does that make a big difference?

Haven't done that before when I have changed auto gear oil.

Car is a 2.6 with AR25 gear box

I just drove a bit more and it is like it goes in to Neutral when you stop. Then after a few seconds it goes in to drive again and everything is OK.

Yes, needs to be running. If filled with engine stopped, it will be massively underfilled, and put extreme wear on the gearbox.

With engine running, ATF is pumped around torque converter and rest of system, not all drained back to sump. So with engine not running, and ATF that would be higher that the fill hole is now missing, and thats a fair amount.

Almost a ltr difference as I found out  :o

Run engine with all wheels off the ground and go through the gears.Back to park and add more with engine running until it starts to dribble out filler hole.Plug back in and take car for few mile drive going through the gears.Back and up in air again with engine running and do a final check and see if you can get anymore in ..again once starts to dribble out plug back in ...lower car and you should be done...and will work properly .

I've never seen an auto trans that was checked with the engine off. The Omega not having a gearbox dipstick is one of the stupid design decisions.

my method is to jack up the side with the filler quite high, get as much as you can in.

Start car, lower car to level, letting excess drain out.  Drive, repeat.

The Barge has the tube, but no dipstick for the trans, and both for the engine along with the means to check it on the dash  :D

Which is even more retarded than deleting the dipstick altogether.
Mercedes list the dipstick itself as a service tool.

REPORT,

I could fill a bit over 2 litres before it started to drip out of the hole.

Now it behaves as normal.

I think it was five years since I did an auto oil change, had forgot about the running engine part  :'(

Thanks for the support guys!!
