General Car Chat / Tyre Dilemma
« on: 02 April 2014, 23:02:24 »
Having just changed the wishbones, and in the process of freeing up all the alignment adjusters, I need a new pair of front tyres. I want Goodyear Asymmetric 2, 97Y XL to match the rears which are less than a month old (Y and XL due to the large amount of towing I do .. pikey van weighs in at 1600Kgs so adds stress to the tyres) .... I also need a full geo check and will go to WIM at Chesham for that .. even though their franchise at Melksham is closer.. I don't know of anyone who has actually been there....

So ...  WIM price for those tyres is £155.98 each ...   :(

I can get them fully fitted locally for £109.99, but can take up to 5 days to get them in stock, or I can get them for £96.50 delivered "next day" and pay my very local fitter £10 a wheel for fitting and balancing....

So around £45 a tyre difference in price ... £90 in total ......

so 3 options ...

a) Drive to WIM and pay an extra £90 and have the geo and tyres done at the same time

b) Drive to WIM have the geo done on old, worn, tyres then drive back and change the tyres, what effect would the car sitting on "bad" tyres have on the geo ??.. it must have some effect as the uneven wear would make the wheel sit skew ??

c) Change the tyres then drive to WIM and have the geo done.. what damage would around 100 miles do to the new tyres ....

decisions... decisions - or would WIM "price match" ....  or would they fit the new tyres if I bought them then took them there ......

Going back as far as 2004 apparently ... I wonder if they'll find some reason to recall Omega's soon :)

General Car Chat / LPG woes :(
« on: 27 February 2014, 15:21:36 »
As many know, my 3.2 has a BRC Sequent LPG system fitted, which is 5 yeasr ols and HAD been as good as gold, until a few days ago.

Symptoms were (initially) it would run fine from overnight, switching to LPG after about 1 mile and continuing to run.... but if then switched off and restarted after about 30 minutes, it would start on petrol (as it is designed to do) then switch to LPG after about 5 seconds, only to just die ... The EML light would come on saying that all petrol injectors had lost power - which is sensible as the LPG ECU has switched them off ! Leave it for an hour or so and it seemed to work OK.

I then had a few days of absolutely no problems at all, then it all started again ... and I realised, and have no proved, that with more than 1/2 a tank of LPG it works perfectly, with less then 1/2 it plays up, with less than 1/4 it simply won't run on LPG at all  :(

Took it into a local LPG place, which has only recently become a BRC place. they have confirmed the fault (with 1/4 tank) as no liquid LPG in the feed line from the tank to the vapouriser. They also found large amounts of corroded particles, looks just like a large spoonful of black talcum powder, in the liquid feed filter and the vapouriser pressure switch :(

Their "best guess" is that the liquid feed pickup in the tank has corroded and when below 1/2 - 1/4 tank the "hole" is in the vapour area of the tank, so no liquid LPG gets to the vapouriser. If the tank is full the hole is immersed in LPG and the system works as designed.

The "logic" of this makes sense to me, but I have no knowledge to prove/disprove the line of reasoning. I ask the LPG experts for their views please.

To rectify the problem they propose to fit a new tank as that will have a new pickup, new tank valves, and a new pressure switch at the vapouriser.

Including labour and VAT they reckon on £630.00 (80 litre tank).

They say they have to fit new tank valves as they cannot remove/reuse the existing valves as there is 15 litres LPG in the tank, and removing the valves would dangerously vent the tank, which they have no facilities to empty. On order to avoid some serious charges for disposal, I will be taking the tank away (with the 15 litres in it) and venting it in a field somewhere !! then removing the valves and taking it to a scrappy.

Does any of that sound plausible ... or am I being taken to the cleaners ??

« on: 15 February 2014, 21:18:40 »
Myself and Mrs E will be in Dunswell tomorrow night, from about 5 pm until an appointment at 2pm Monday afternoon. We'll need somewhere to eat tomorrow night, and something to do as well then something to do Monday morning through until lunch time ish .....

Any recommendations of eateries / good pubs - although I'll be driving so 2 pints maximum if we dine, 1 pint if we don't - for Sunday night ??

Also take any suggestions of things to see/places to go Monday morning ...

The New 2014 Ford

Renault and Ford have joined forces to create the perfect small car for women.

Mixing the Renault 'clit' and the Ford 'Taurus' they have designed the 'Clitaurus'.

It comes in pink, and the average male car thief won't be able to find it - let alone turn it on - even if someone tells him where it is and how to do it.

Rumor has it though, that it leaks transmission fluid once a month, and can be a real bitch to start in the morning! Some have reported that on cold winter mornings, when you really need it, you can't get it to turn over.

New models are initially fun to own, but very costly to maintain, and horribly expensive to get rid of. Used models may initially appear to have curb appeal and a low price, but eventually have an increased appetite for fuel, and the curb weight typically increases with age. Manufacturers are baffled as to how the size of the boot increases, but say that the paint may just make it LOOK bigger.

This model is not expected to reach collector status. Most owners will find it is best to just lease one, and replace it in a few years.

 :D :D

Edit .. booger .. supposed to be in the Jokes section .. could an Admin please move ..

Apologies ... :(

Omega General Help / Strange occurrence on LPG ....
« on: 26 January 2014, 17:54:17 »
Bit weird this ... LPG system is the BRC Sequent 56

Did about 25 miles this morning .. in bloody awful weather .. that included some motorway & some A roads all at "reasonable" speeds, and I avoided all the big puddles.. :) Car sat for an hour then was driven 5 miles to the LPG point ... all this done on LPG as normal without a single glitch.

Filled with LPG exactly as normal .. started engine, ran for about 5 secs then just died ...  with the EML light coming on just as it died. Read the codes (code reader lives in the boot) .. 6 codes .. all essentially the same .. #1 Injector open circuit, #2 injector open circuit ... etc !!  Reset the codes and tried again  .. Same thing .. runs for 5 seconds then dies with the EML coming on... same codes back. Checked under the bonnet ... nothing abnormal to be seen, all connections seem to be made.

Clear the codes again, select petrol only, car starts and runs without any problems. switch to LPG and it dies with the EML coming on, same faults ...

Now, as I understand it, the LPG ECU switches off the petrol injectors when it changes to the gas injectors. The system obviously knew there was gas in there as it was not auto-changing back to petrol, so it seemed to me that the LPG ECU was switching OFF the petrol injectors, but not firing the gas injectors ??

As it was persisting down, and I had no tools anyway, I drove home on petrol, absolutely no problems at all. Once it stopped raining I checked all connections again, and set up a meter to check for voltage at a gas injector. On this system the engine always starts on petrol then auto-changes once the gas pressure is high enough, so to get the voltage check I had to start the engine and wait for the changeover  ..  I expected the engine to just die again as the changeover occurred ... but it didn't ... ran like a dream ... nowt wrong that I can find/repeat ...

Have done 20 miles, with 10 stops/ restarts, all perfect. ... :(

So what is the connection between the act of refueling the LPG and it deciding not to run for about 30 minutes ??  Any one any ideas ??

Puzzled of Wiltshire  :(

Omega General Help / Wishbones
« on: 24 January 2014, 22:58:43 »
Lots of different threads on these .. I don't have the equipment, or ability ( :) ) to poly certain bits and replace other bits .. so its complete unit changes here   :)

Lemforder have lasted 25000 miles / 2 1/2 years each time and are available from AGP at £65.36 each

but they also do Meyle at £84.00 each  (I'm not even considering the QH ones after the shenanigans with the front wheel bearings) ...

Question is .. are the Meyle ones any better/worth the extra £15 (which is nowt over 25000 miles) ??

Is there any actual experience of the Meyle wishbones on the forum ??

many thanks  :)

Might seem very pointless to some .. but the BBC sports web site reporting a postponed match from saturday ... (and we never had a match scheduled for Saturday!)

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/rugby-union/teams/bath

the replay could be difficult to attend ....

especially as we actually PLAYED on the 16 and won 54 - 13
