Cheap to buy, nice to be in, horrible to own.
That's what Citroen means.

Why are they horrible to own?
if you get hdi
then you have long list of things to go wrong and then its not so cheap to run
maybe more expansive then omega petrol

I like them, got a consistent 44 mpg on my citroen C4 Grand Picasso that I had for 3 and a half years, same engines as Peugeot anyway..... :y

I went out to buy another Citroen recently but ended up with a Honda Accord, fab car, but still considering changing it for another C4 Grand Picasso............ :-\ :-\ :-\

Can anyone recommend something better?

Cheap to buy and fix. :y
golf mk3 tdi, audi 80 tdi, 406 hdi there few cars on list  ;)

I'll second the 406,just sold mine to a customer who was so impressed with it he wanted to buy it,it's done 207000 miles but that didn't put him off  :y

I'll third the 406.  :y  I bought one in the auctions as a workhorse, used and abused it for 6 months and then sold it on to a builder who 2 years on is doing much the same with it!  :y

I'm not sure about the C5, Ms.Kate.......but the larger C6 could be considered as an Omega replacement. :-* :-*

Go back to an infinitely repairable Morris Minor/Traveller, Kate - no Road Tax if old enough and you can mend most things with a hammer!

Kate, that is beyond belief! I had the Austin equivalent, an A30, back then, which I let go for a song in favour of a Morris Oxford.
 :'(

Ron.

P.S. Hope you are now nicely settled in that terrific part of the country.

Aaaah, lovely!
Timing CHAIN, perfectly lubricated and tensioned with a Reynolds slipper tensioner - lasted forever, unlike our cambelts. I once changed the big end shells and piston rings the day before going on holiday up North (bravery on the part of a Southerner!).
The only really awkward job was changing the thermostat bypass hose, but after hearing about the "bastard bolt" from on here, it was a doddle!

Mini bypass hose is really awkward? Why not loosen the 4 bolts holding the waterpump in place and make it easy? And use a kevlar hose so it won't be a problem again.

My sons girlfriend has a C5 HDI and has had on and off problems with the Diesel Particulate Filter, (DPF) due to
doing mostly short journeys to and from work. Also some niggles with electrics and dash warning lights as well.
Good comfy ride but seems a disaster waiting to happen, and it,s FRENCH. :'(

I've only driven the 1.8 petrol one, but its desperately underpowered, and makes it quite heavy of go-go juice. But then, nothing is ever driven like a hire car ;D

That's pretty much the perfect car, and suitably modified for everyday use, should you want to.......... :y :y :y
