I would suspect stolen and recovered then paid out judging by the bits of dash that have been removed

Have you actually had to deal with the 'cheaper end of' car buying public?  I just couldn't be arsed with dealing with the txt spk;

Alr8 m8, iz da car stl 4sell?  W8tin on gyro 2 cum....... kan u tyke ov ov sell.  B round frydy.

Sooner just get a hairy arsed bloke to turn up with a hiab, and be done with it.

I started to watch a few of his videos a while back. So many of the cars he picks up I wouldn't have scrapped if i'd owned them. Seems to be a sad effect of modern living - save the planet by not using carrier bags and replacing one bulb with an LED one, but scrap cars when they are less than ten years old because it doesn't fit in with the image / next door neighbour got something newer.

indeed , I wonder what the actual carbon footprint is when you take a car 10 years old that needs only minor repair, transport it to the other end of the country, dismantle it, recycle what you can, landfill the rest, then get raw and recycled materials from all around the world, process it all into a new car that will last 10 years .
my Omega is 18 years old
the last carlton I had for 12 years is still MOTed today ,reg 1993 ,so 28 years old

I'm wondering on the merits of something old enough to be mot and tax exempt... Who cares if it only does 15mpg :D

Only a real saving if you have several cars you don't use very much.

Every car should have an independent inspection, so MOT exemptions are a terrible idea.

Tax exemption is nice, but saves what, £200 pa?

Pick the right car, and an old car is still perfectly good as a daily provided things like climate control and poncy radios aren't on your essential list. A nice Triumph 2500, Rover P6, Volvo or Granada are good candidates, if you can find one that's been welded properly and is already in frequent use.

Reminds me of my 1976 (P) 2500S. Mimosa yellow with Stag alloys as standard. Twin SU carbs instead of injection.

Overdrive made it very 'long of leg' although economy was still woeful at around 13 MPG, following a play with the Colourtune.

By seven years old it was completely rotten with rust despite the loving care and attention of the BL workers who put their heart and soul into her creation. ::) ::) ::) :)

how the hell do you get it that low? Single SUs are excellent, but I've never seen a decent throttle linkage on a factory twin(or more) installation.

Colourtunes are pretty good but if using them on multiple carb engines, you want at least one per carb. I've a friend who tunes the quad Dellortos on his hotrod with eight of them, bought for pennies at various autojumbles.

100% agree with everything here.
Yes the mot exemption is a totally stupid idea. Most classic owners will know their cars inside out and still have them mot,d. But there will be loads that don't have a clue how safe their car is and choose to not mot them.cannot understand the idea one little bit.
And yes none of the modern fancy features are essential. My daily drivers have carbs, points, manual window and locks and a basic radio cassette. No bl***y screens or gizmos.perfectly useable in a modern world in every scenario

I appreciate that it still has to be legally roadworthy, so speed taped sills and rear valences are asking to get an appointment with a magistrate ;D

Making Bosch jetronic work after a 20 year rest is more of a concern. In which case the MoT exemption is a moot point as a modern drive train counts as a substantial change and therefore requires an MoT.

The only way I could get it to run smoothly, and with immediate throttle response, was to have it running 'rich'

Set up to run properly on the Colourtune it would always gag and stutter as though it was starved of fuel and running too 'lean'

It's possible the carb needles and jets were worn and needed replacing. I was only 23 what did I know? :)

Lovely looking car though.

Probably just needed a spot of oil in the dampers in the carburettor pistons. ;)

The last drips out of the engine oil can always worked for me.

Always works for me too still. 20w/50 although the reccommended stormberg oil is much thinner but with modern fuel its not going to be the same characteristics anyway in terms of throttle response.

Straight 20w or (3 in 1 machine oil) was recommended for engines in normal tune although I doubt if many of us knew or cared then ;D

Are you sure that 3in1 is 20w?? If you put 3in1, hydraulic oil, sewing machine oil or any other similarly thin oil in a dashpot it won't be there for long.
