Water blisters or rust?

Which panel is that? One of the blown over ones following the bbq?

Micro Blistering.

That's seen some paint in it's life I would have thought.

That.

You have two options:

Sand the whole area back to metal and repaint using a matched paint system, ensuring that the manufacturer's procedures are followed to the letter.

Ignore it.

Its the roof, boot and top of rear wings.

As far as I know, its never been resprayed, and certainly lacks the orange peel effect.  Doors not showing same effect.  Bonnet and front wings not showing same effect either, but they are not original, as I swapped my downtown Beirut looking ones with VXL V6's diesel when he was looking the other way.

(Only item resprayed following "the incident that we don't mention" was the front bumper, after it was reheated again to try to straighten it).

Press on the buttons, and water squirts out, so guessing water has managed to get under the paint?

This is, obviously, the first time I noticed it, but it has been mostly raining all week.  Would the -12C from the week before helped it along its way?

The ice would have definitely (not) helped the situation.  The moisture has probably always been there, but with the expansion due to freezing, and for a lengthy period of time, casued it to become visible.

A couple of days of sunshine should see it receed, that's if the colour and laquer doesn't split.

Well both of my silver cars have the same issue in various places that I don't believe have ever been resprayed, also the clear coat  and silver have flaked off where the roof bends down into the drainage channel on one side. there was no rust underneath so I think it's the affect of being sat in the sun for many years.

Mines the same  :(
seems to be a rare z157 silver paint issue  :P
someone said it was due to antifreeze mix
I'm not convinced
I think it's a paint issue from factory that's now showing with age

The shock is its gone from zero (that I'd noticed) to several hundred of these, seemingly overnight*, which had me perplexed.

*OK, maybe over a week or 2, as with it pissing down most of the week, I might have discounted them for raindrops on the car...

This is the same on mine too. There were a few on the roof only  5 years ago when I bought it and I had the roof painted. All was well.
They then started to appear on the bonnet and boot more recently which is why I advertised for panels wanted a while back. Mine was original paintwork too and after seeing a few silver omegas around and on eBay it seems to be a problem affecting them too .but just the z157 not z147 ?
Just before Christmas I decided to bite the bullet and visited my local body shop. There are a few around by me but lots don't have an oven so just air dry the paint. This time of year and after having various issues over the years with soft paint  wanted it baking in an oven properly.
They looked at the car and decided it was a windscreen out bare metal respray and quoted me a price which I was happy with. They said they had seen a few similar silver cars recently ? .
Anyway car is back now complete with all new paint on everything even the sides. Everything basically above the lower door trim strips .they also did the bumpers because the masking tape pulled paint off and finally sanded and lacquered the headlamps too.
Don't know why it's happened ,they agreed it was original paint and think it was to do with heat seeing as it affected horizontal panels mainly although it was on the sides. (Tops of wings and rear quarters and bits on doors. ) plastic items like rear trims, side trims, mirrors bumpers unaffected.
I intend keeping the car and it wasn't an expensive purchase initially(£230 spares or repair) so it is worth it to now have a "new" looking car that will last me the next 20 or so years

Wow, never knew the Z157's had such a common problem :o

My (far superior) MFL MV6 was Z147, which (predictably) was superior as well ;D

And you scrapped it because...  ::)

My Desmond Oxymoron had 26k on it but the paint on the upper surfaces was trashed from a year under a tree. Looked like it had been stonechipped from above once it was cleaned up.

That was Z157 too :D

Yeah,my brothers 'x' plate is z147 and no signs of any paint issues on any panels .
Certain colours of certain manufacturers do seem to have issues.
Lots of 80's carnelian red Vauxhalls had peeling lacquer.
Lots of red 80's vw's go pink !
Typical that our z157 omegas have issues .although the garage did say they had seen a few other manufacturers silvers recently with spots !
Was going to consider a colour change to the darker silver if I'd known they were going to repaint as much as they did but too late now anyway.

And you scrapped it because...  ::)
It was truly one of those cars I always look back with with immense fondness, and with my rose tinted glasses, always regret the day it went.  Especially with Terry the chip man giving me regular updates about what had been taken off it with each of his visits to the scrapyard it went to.

The final straw was the gearbox - which had already had a very full and interesting life in its 240k miles - which decided that a box full of neutrals was a far more befitting way to show a Passat a clean pair of heels than any form of drive.  It would have been a cheap fix to bolt a new one on - probably £75 for a box, £50 for the ATF and £20 for the thrust washer.  ut it was already on top of it having a new (to it) rear subframe a week or 2 earlier, needed some sills welding on and some floor holes patched, and would soon need some welding around the rear structural parts.  And remained a 240k, 19yr old car with a tatty bodywork, no working aircon and an annoying, nuisance factor, unlocatable engine oil leak. Plus there was a licence issue*

But yes, I still regret it.  And I still maintain that was the best Omega to drive that I have ever driven...  ...and by god I've driven a lot.

*The car encouraged driving briskly.  The final straw which meant in my heart of hearts I knew it would have to go, was a trip back from Ipswich in Friday evening rush hour, before the Huntinggdon/Cambridge improvements were open. 140 miles in 2 hours, including stopping for fuel.  My clean licence was not going to withstand that sort of behaviour all the time.  Ironic that I swap it for the XJ to slow me down - which it has - and I pick up a patronisation course soon after getting it, for doing 80mph on a dual carriageway ;D

I know the Zafira A is German built ,and they did a pretty good job of underseal ,paint etc ,unlike Omega  >:(
Zafira B is Bochum in Germany ,not great underneath protection wise .some Polish made ones too
it's pot luck where astra G and H are made i think , probably Ellesmere Port, or Belgium , or Germany or elsewhere  ;D

Mine was perfect everywhere except the roof 5 years ago . Then over the next few years it appeared and spread on the bonnet and boot. Then this last year it appeared around the tops of the front and rear wings and starting working its way round the sides.
That's why they bare metalled mine just to be sure

I had this on my now departed Z157 too, sadly I hadn't seen it because of the quarter inch of moss that was covering the top (too many projects, too little time). I only saw it after I'd jetwashed the living daylights out of it and suddenly had no paint. I think it had been the wet and the persistent icing over that initially caused the bubbles.

Another member of this parish has had the same happen on his Z157 too, only noticed the other day...

when my roof was done 5 years ago it was only in the colour coat and when you got it down to primer it seemed flat and uniform. this time they said the bonnet and roof were further down and had to go back to bare metal. but the  plastic body parts were ok ?   so who knows.
its all repairable obviously but depends on the individual owner .

My Z157 Omega looks like it has been pelted, from a gritter on the middle of the bonnet and in line with the bonnet on the roof.  The wifes Jungle Green Omega, hasn't moved for a while but no damage to the paintwork. Both were under snow and ice at the same time.  I assume the pot marks, are down to frost getting in.

Wifes bonnet

My bonnet

Good job got some bodywork to do. Might get car sprayed in solid colour, instead of metalic. Easier to repair and patch.  :)

Moonstone? My last Omega estate was that colour. Not as glamorous as Rubens red or Polar? Blue, but a good smart colour nonetheless 8)

if id known they were going to paint as much of mine that they did id have probably gone for a colour change too.maybee to the darker silver grey that you dont see very often .
Moonstone? My last Omega estate was that colour. Not as glamorous as Rubens red or Polar? Blue, but a good smart colour nonetheless 8)

My beloved Zeke is Moonland or Moonstone or something. Love the colour, hints of 6boue in the sunlight.

My silver car had the same rash on the bonnet & in a line over the roof & down the boot lid. Was it something in the  screen wash  :-\
