Well......
https://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/cars/article-10473767/The-second-hand-cars-soaring-price-cost-new-versions.html
-
Blimey! If that lot are "soaring" in value, people must be getting desperate. ;D
-
All caused by a shortage of semiconductors. It just so happens that my employer is a manufacturer of semi conductors.
Therefore, its their fault, so they owe me a car.
I shall tell them so when Im back in work tomorrow. ;D
There is an 18 plate Dacia Duster with 30k on the clock sat in the car park doing nothing.
Could be tempted to claim it, but it has the same engine as Pierre, so not much point. ::) ;D
If I were going to spend that money on another car I may well be tempted to in the opposite direction and get another old Merc 190D.
It would have to be more presentable and less rusty than my last one, but I could run it on new vegoil from Asda at less than £1 a litre, which would equate to similar running costs to the French contraption now, without having to rebuild it every other week.
-
ASDA veg oil is £1.15 a litre nowadays, Albs. Inflation ;D
-
It can be had for under a quid if you shop around. But even 1.15 would be a lot cheaper than diesel. :)
I could go back to filtering wvo I suppose. Its a pita but usually free.
-
I used to run my old Merc C250TD on veggie oil from Costco in 20 ltr bottles which was easy to store, pour in the tank and also easy to dispose of the empty bottle in the recycling. :y
Once I went to ASDA and filled my trolley with 3 ltr bottles which got some funny looks at the checkout! ;D But the smaller bottles were a faff to fill the tank with and they were a PITA to dispose of afterwards as I had too many for the recycling box. ::)
Cost wise I don't think there was much difference, but the bigger bottles from Costco were definitely easier. :y

who would choose a tan interior though? ??? ::)
-
I would be more worried about the exterior colour, but at least '70s tan will wear better than the current dross...
MoT exempt too, which will save on maintenance costs :D

You could always borrow it for a weekend and swap over a couple of bits - like the engine ;D

Im considering that. :y ;D

Not overly keen on left hand drive, but the biggest concern with those old Mercs is rust. They are often riddled with it.
May have a free 1.2 Punto available soon, which might do for a commute car, although I imagine low 40,s mpg ? rather than nearly 60 from Pierre.
Would do the job for a while at least though. Then maybe have one more summer of fun with the Boxster, fix a few issues on it and then get rid of all three cars and have just one tedious little reliable Toyota.

You must be joking? A 70s diesel Merc imported from the middle east as a daily driver :o Their reputation for being bullet proof was an illusion when they were new enough to warrant the open wallet maintenance they require; 40 years later it's an expensive liability.
Keeping the clit on the road would prove cheaper and less frustrating.
And that's without the horrendous driving experience of an old Merc. If you must have such a thing, driving one back from Greece would be the way to get it.

I was so appalled by the interior colour that i totally missed that it was a left hooker. ;D

That's why the MoT exempt part is so great. Also coming from the Middle East, rust shouldn't be a real concern :y
LHD isn't an issue in something that old/slow either :D

With around 50bhp/tonne, overtaking isn't an option, which actually makes driving more interesting, so without overtaking, LHD is largely irrelevant ;)

and about as nice to drive as an old diesel Merc :y
-
That's slightly unfair, they drive/ride as well as the Granada. The only difference is steering box rather than a rack, but that's six of one etc ;)
-
I was happy driving my old Merc 190D. Wish I still had it. Hindsight knows everything though. ::)
As for the milk float. I wonder if I could connect it to the chargers at work ?
Im getting a bit old for projects though. ;D

So the chip manufacturers changed production to more profitable chips like iphone, laptops, tablets when manufacturers cut back on car production due to Covid slow down.
Then when they wanted to ramp up production again, the chip manufacturers have little capacity for low value chips?
So why hasnt the US and Europe learnt from this and “ clubbed together” to have a North American facility and one in Europe? Cost would be about 10 billion each plant ( fag packet calculation) Chip levy of say £100 on each car sold for two years. Cars are going to have more and more chips going forward.
A friend ordered a new tow car ( Land Rover) in June. Still no idea when it will be delivered however
The dealer has good news. Your 2022 spec car has been changed to a 2023 spec car. No all round cameras ( no doubt to save on chips) instead other extras thrown in. Another friend has just last week received his new car ordered Feb last year.

I thought the 1.3 was a diesel, surely it's either a 1.2 or a 1.4 if it's petrol.
-
It's both according to the advert :D

It’s petrol hence the lpg. It says so on the dvla also😬

Er no, the higher volume chips they moved to are lower margin but, they had to sign upto delivery commitments. For a fab to break even it needs to be at 90%+ capacity, when automotive demand dropped, laptop and home office IT demand climbed, it was an easy decision, sign up or go bust.
Things are starting to level off now but, we are seeing the second wave now...........as the chip sellers are rationalising supply, switching fab suppliers, and fab plants are obsoleting the old lines......all good fun ;D :y

Wished I'd kept my 190e sold it when I bought the Omega only had a single garage back then & didn't like leaving the Omega out in the elements, the 190e belonged to a doctor only owner with full history ,absolutely mint condition that was around 2010 the Merc is still around ( L724 HSG ) & probably worth 3 times what I sold it for.

Hindsight is indeed a wonderful thing. ;) If we kept all the crap, and otherwise, that we thought might appreciate in value over the years, we'd all have mountains in our back gardens. Those of us who are lucky enough to have a garden that is. :D

Bargain. Would look grand outside a wine bar.
-
My best mate in Norn Irn - who was a nutter of a driver in a previous life - is obsessed with those things has a couple of them which have been restored to " as new" condition.
Theres no accounting for taste. ::)
I might consider one if it came with a Fireblade engine installed. :)
-
One of my mates had a Dyane 6 for his first car. We tried hard to roll it..... ;D
-
One of our friends in the seventies bought a brand new one in bright green he was known as Toady for the rest of his life, got to admit that it was a brilliant little car.
-

I was driven around Kirkistown race track in one, and the owner seemed to be trying his best to roll it, but the wheels stayed flat on the the tarmac regardless of the ludicrous lean angles the body was achieving.
-
Had a 2CV years ago.Seem to recall having to thrash it everywhere, noisy, basic? ::) but comfy enough.Taught me a lot about maintaining momentum. An absolute hoot to drive round the twisty bits with its insane lean angles.
-
Mum had one for four years... Used to spend the winters with a duvet under the bonnet. Just about kept up with the traffic on the M25 when they opened the Surrey stretch :o

Best thing you can do with a "tin snail" is build one of these:

Mehari replica. But you would also need to move to the Mediterranean.
Same thing applies to a Mini; Moke, Scamp or Hustler.
And either of them would suit a small electric motor and battery pack as their IC drivetrains are utterly hopeless
-
I have to admit to owning one of them in the early 90,s. Only had it for a month. It was traded in against a Metro I was selling. £5 of pertol lasted 500 miles. One owner car and had the optional CND sticker on the boot lid instead of the "save the wales" which was the other option. Bright green, kids loved it for the fully fold back roof
-
Many years ago when we did Chezkwrecks, there was a modified one:
https://artcarcentral.com/crazy-chopped-czech-citroen-rally-car-the-duck-by-jaryn/
We had to tow it at least once and the wheel alignment was so bad the driver had to change the tyres twice ;D
-
Tin snail is worth good money now as is the Dyane.
