General Car Chat / Bini radio replacement.
« on: Today at 12:09:53 »
So, near as I can tell the Bini had a simple radio cd as standard.

Previously someone changed it for a Pioneer Bluetooth lump and whilst it turned on/off I couldn't figure out how to use it and it looked hideous.

I had a touch screen unit kicking around so went to fit that instead but have run into an issue...

Connected directly to the battery it powers up fine, but using the adapter lead it doesn't even pretend to. I've tried swapping the red and yellow leads on the head unit side but no difference.

The adapter harness that came with the car was a mess, but the car side is unmolested. And whilst the pins on the new adapter are what you would expect to see, it's obviously not happy.

From the pinouts I can find online, the factory unit uses the CAN+ as a verification to turn on the power to the radio. To bypass this, do I need to return it to CAN- or ground?

Fitting an aftermarket unit should be plug and play, but that's clearly not the case :-\

These are the pinouts as on the car...

The Tawt extradited from Pakistan for the murderand convicted.....
Piran Ditta Khan spent nearly two decades evading justice for his part in the killing of PC Sharon Beshenivsky in Bradford on 18 November 2005.

When are we going to learn in this country ffs??? I weep, I really do!!  :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(
Should have been accidentally shot on arrest, but at least he's being held to account.

Swampy the eco-warrior has died of a heart attack.

They offered him a bypass but he wasn't having any of it.
Funny, but unfortunately untrue.

Should add, quite fun to drive.  Although the seats are incompatible with my poor back.
That was a concern, but it's actually pretty reasonable in that respect. Obviously nowhere near as comfortable/adjustable as what we're used to, but it's a very different car.

The gearbox is the first proper issue it's had.

The rear windows don't work, and weren't when I bought it,  investigated for mechanical functionality... Recoding required.

The rest of my time on it falls into the tinkering category rather than actual repair work ;)

I was trying to start it up after the filter change but the battery was going really quickly - as I had the radio on and off the last few weeks while working -  so not sure if the pump would have primed enough to see any leaks but would need full pressure to check.
You seriously want to risk it? ???

They usually stay put in the hose fittings.

There's some play in the clips, but you'll soon know when the pump builds pressure...

Personally I would cut the fitting off and use some ISO 7480 marine fuel hose and two stainless jubilee clips each side.

The early Chrysler engine is utter junk and drinks fuel so much, when a friend replaced his with a v8 Cayenne, he noticed no change in fuel bills.

Best avoided, the later French engine is better
I'll bear that in mind if I buy another, but this one seems to be around 40mpg on my commute... Which is about 21mpg better than the S Class. Although I did know that when I bought it, so that's not a slur on the Merc.

Went to look at and bought a temporary car pending fixing the S Class properly.

Working MK1 facelift Bini Cooper with almost 6 months MoT.

Needs a few bits addressing, but actually drives quite well for what it is.

Is owing a Benz,, the new Omega something needs fixing weekly.
Nah, that's a Jaaaag.  In the year I've had it TB has had to dismantle his engine twice.

Well, the low speed fan kicks in on demand and runs when the relay is bypassed, so that's all dandy.

Nothing happens when you bypass the high speed fan at the engine fuse box, so I guess that's toast.

Phew, it's a '55 plate :D

MoT history suggests that CVs done, suspension feels fine, car tracks true.

Showed no sign of overheating on the way home although I bought it knowing the fans weren't working. It's had a thermostat, but I will start with the fans and give the cooling system a decent going through in due course.

WOut of curiosity, what coolant should it have in it?

Thanks Viral_Jim and for Stemo I want to inform that we have hot days almost every Summer.  Now it does not look very promising...

That's more than we have!  ;D
Technically, two sunny days justified the addition of an 's' at the end of day.

To have more sunny days than the two we get, Finland only needs three days.  >:D

That said, far enough north and the Midsummer month  may as well be a single day. :o
