General Car Chat / Re: jump start
« on: 17 January 2013, 00:05:54 »
I disagree. You want to get some charge into the battery on the disabled vehicle because there is probably too much resistance in the jump leads to power the starter motor directly, especially if the leads are a bit cheap. You need some contribution of current from the flat battery too, and that means charging it a little first. That means connecting as close as possible to the battery, really.

Get a car with a properly flat battery (as I had last night  ::)) and you'll find it needs the jump leads connected for a few minutes with the donor engine running before it will turn over.

The main reason for the recommendation to make the final negative connection to a lifting eye or similar is that there will be a spark when you connect it, and the battery is a potential source of hydrogen and oxygen, so could explode given a spark at its' negative terminal.

I always put both leads from battery to the battery ie pos to pos and neg to neg that should give you good contact, and have the donar vehicle running

Not the best way as much of the "donor" energy is now used trying to "recharge" the flat battery, effectively it is a resistance in the circuit.

Better to connect just the positive to the battery and the negative to a good 0v (earth :( ) on the engine ... usually a lifting bracket is a good point. Bolt heads are not usually good as they are often covered in an oily film as best .. :)
Yes but if the battery is that discharged then atleast it will charge it up quicker and then give it a chance

Omega General Help / Re: Tyre size
« on: 13 January 2013, 17:38:04 »
Facelifts have two factory sizes :y

225/55/16 on either 6 spoke polished wheels (GLS) or 5 spoke painted (CD), or 7 spoke painted (CDX).

235/45/17 on a choice of 5 spoke flat face painted ('99-'02 MV6 and Elite) or 6spoke painted (MV6 and Elite,'02 on)

Good tyres in both sizes can be bought reliably for less than £70 fitted :y

I believe alot of pre facelifts used either 205/65/15, 225/55/16 or 235/45/17 for MV6 and some Elite :-\

May be they are Factory sizes but people do put different sizes on as I found out front can be different from bakc tyres too people do some strange things when it comes to tyres, as said need to know what is fitted to the car

there a lots of different sizes from 15-17" wheels and I think 195- 235 width and ranging from 65-45 height I believe there is a post in the maintenance section, so you really need to know what the car has on it, Prices can be anything from around £40 to over £100

That is not a huge amount of oil it must have been losing oil because if you had lost most of the oil out of sump it would be a hell of a lot more on the floor   :D is there any oil along the bottom of the car under the floor pan if so then there must be a problem with it coming out from somewhere you just need to follow it back to where it stops and hey presto  ;) you bet it will be somewhere nice and easy to get to though >:(

Jubilee is the oe fitment, but they are the work of saiten. It's possible to over tighten and crack the plastic. Plus, as Master once said so long ago, the rubber pipe goes hard after a while and relaxes, and because the jubilee needs to tighten itself to compensate, it leaks. Where as a spring clip, like those used on the hbv, will hold tension .

So a spring clip is better, if you have one spare, and there is access to get it in position.?
I guess jubilee is a clamp with screw? I am learning English English.:)
What is MOT? Safety inspection? Is that once a year?
Yup every year we have to pay the government even more money to have the MOT (Ministry of transport) road worthy test

I used Accelera's on my 2.9 scorpio and found them very good, My mother had runways on her fiesta but will never buy them again as they are noisy and didn't care much for grip either
