MOT ?
« on: 07 September 2007, 12:42:04 »

Can someone help I have been checking my records this morning and have discovered my MOT has expired today that'll teach me  :-[

Does anyone know if I have any grace on this or should I stop using the car, I know it will fail at the moment so not really worth putting it in for one due to my ABS issue.

Cheers in advance

AFAIK there are no days of grace at all, and you may well invalidate your insurance if you knowingly drive a vehicle with no MOT and not roadworthy as they are both conditions of most insurance "small print"

Whenever I buy a car .. which isn't that often as I tend to keep them quite a long time ... I always ensure that an MOT is done in the month following the tax renewal. As I tax my cars for 12 months the tax reminder serves as an MOT reminder BUT I can always tax the car on the very-soon-to-expire MOT, just in case of problems .. :)

When the ticket is out, its out I'm afraid.  No days grace as there used to be (and no longer is and not been for quite a few years) on tax discs.

As quoted, if you have a bump and its out of test, some Ins Co's will only pay out the 3rd party costs and leave you high and dry with a damaged car (if fully comp).  Check your small print in the insurance doc.  It will say somewhere that at all times when in use it will be MOT tested and legal in all mechanical respects.

Down to individual garages afaik, the one I use do, serves as an advert for the garage too. Not that I go anywhere else cos it's run by an old mate.

Cheers for the input guys the car is safely sat on my parents drive and going no where for the time being.

Its typical things seem to happen all at once for me at the mo but things will get sorted.

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/UntaxedVehicle/DG_069727

When SORN is needed

Make a SORN:

    * if your vehicle is being kept off the road due to repair, MOT failure or is not being used
    * if you’re not renewing your tax disc and keeping the vehicle off road
    * if you’re applying for a refund and keeping the vehicle of road
    * every 12 months if you continue to keep your vehicle off the road
    * in advance if your vehicle is to be kept off the road in the Great Britain when you’re abroad

You may have to SORN it as well. DVLA will assume you are using a car without
MOT if you don't, now that everything is on its Database.

Not sure how you stand legally on this, but these days you seem to be presumed guilty
of stuff until you can prove innocence.

AFAIK SORN only applies if the TAX has expired and you don't intend to re-tax immediately. If the Tax is current and it is just the MOT that has expired you can keep the car on the public highway but you cannot drive it.

I await to be corrected but that is my understanding of the law ...

Quote
If you keep your vehicle off the road and don’t tax it, you must tell the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) by making a SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification).

and

Quote
You’ll be committing an offence if you use or keep your vehicle on the public road without a current tax disc. If you cannot obtain a tax disc, you must keep the vehicle off road.

While your vehicle is off the road, you have 14 days in which to obtain a tax disc or make a SORN.

When I had my Cavalier the ABS warning light was on and MOT was due. A business card in front of the ABS light got it through MOT ;)
