Title: car cd players
Post by: raywilb on 07 July 2023, 21:49:19
is it a health & safety issue why modern cars have not got a cd player ? . i just bought a Citroen C4 Cactus spacetourer  which has not got one. personally I like to play cd,s when on long journies sometimes. So contemplating having one installed, maybe a multichanger too Probably boot area with a remote control . not sure whats on the market so will need to speak to a professional

IIRC the head unit is all part & parcel of the dash screens .... I think you'll struggle to integrate a stand alone CD unit into what's already there. I'd guess there's a USB somewhere (father in law has a C4 Spacetourer but I can't think what's in it) .... it'd be easier & cheaper to load your CDs onto a memory stick

This. I ripped (I believe that's the street cred term used by the yoofs) all my CD's onto a memory stick. Quite depressing that 1000 CD's easily fit onto one $10 memory stick. My newest car (2013) has a 32GB limit on memory sticks, but I suspect later cars support even more.

Just gotta work out how to get it to work it in the LC now. The CDP09 is a bit skippy.

Old and new can work together ;)

Following is a shopping list to get the job done:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/325625805811

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/175802513227 (6disc)

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/354889669175 (10 disc)

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/374511670835

Basically £50 and a bit of effort  :y

Basically, you mount the controller somewhere convenient, give it a switched 12v and fit the cd changer where you want. Run the control cable from the control to the changer and the audio cable from the changer to the cars factory 3.5mm aux input and call it done :y

That's fine, for anyone who has any idea of what you're talking about

I play everything from a USB stick now. Rip CDs on my home pc and copy onto the stick. I've found that sticks over 32Gb just don't work, and must be formatted to Fat32 (brand new ones usually are). Also anything bigger than 32Gb can hold too many albums to scroll through safely while driving. Even 8GB holds more than most CD changers.

But, even USB sockets are becoming unusual as it is often assumed that the car is "connected" and has crapple or whatever.

That sounds like a lot of faffing around when you can simply put a CD in or play Spotify though the 3.5mm aux input from your phone headphone socket.

Ray wants to be able to play CDs in his new car, and that's not an unreasonable ask. The above list of items (or similar) will do just that ;)

Manufacturers started to drop the jack plug socket on flagship mobiles around 2016 onwards, hence the wireless Apple AirPods and Samsungs Ear Buds.  :y

One less hole to allow the ingress of water. You can buy a USB C to phono adapter though

Yep, no 3.5mm jack on my iPhone 11. It's the same kind of thing for the car, though. Lightning lead from phone to car USB and anything that's on the phone is now available in the car, including Google maps.

Mine can do that, whilst charging your phone and still let me plug my headphones in :D

It won't fold in half though, although I don't see that as a negative :y

Primary reason is that you no longer need an audio quality Analogue to Digital converter, all audio channels are then digital and easier/cheaper to handle

CD players got ditched as nobody wanted them anymore, demand dropped like a stone, and no suppliers would make an automotive spec player so even if you wanted to fit one, you could not source one.

In their last days they were a USB device hung of a USB hub either in the head unit, or in the user interface panel but, now no more.

Actually, my suggested solution doesn't require a 3.5mm jack at all as it connects inline to the car aerial line.

Which raises a different question... What type of aerial fittings do Citroen currently use :-\
