Just had my renewal through for the Zaf, a 50% increase from M&S to £390 - jokers.

Shopped around and managed to limit the damage to an £11 increase ::)

That is about forty quid more than I pay to insure the humble 2 series. ::)

In 5 years my insurance has gone by £400.

Haven't had a claim for over 20 years, and that wasn't my fault.

I tended to stick with the same companies and having 3 cars I stayed with Admiral Multi Car for quite a while.  As I Sorned 2 of the cars I had just the one to insure and at 1st they did me a good deal.

Over a period of time (when there was a fuss about the female premiums)  and prices started to drop, Admiral prices rose instead.  So I was about to renew and look for a better deal and Admiral not only took money from my bank without my permission (£750ish) whilst I was in hospital and unable to ring them, once sorted I paid around £250/270. (£500ish refunded)

After that I tried the comparison sites, was surprised when I got a deal for £150,  Used the comarison sites since.  Been with the RAC last 2 years. :y :y

 2 years is about right.

Year one they give you a good deal.

Year two they put the price up but are still just about competitive.

By year three they have decided you are a lazy bastard who CBA to shop around and so add 30-50%

....I believe the old scouse lad has been with the same insurance company for 87 years. 8)

....
and Admiral not only took money from my bank without my permission ( .....

Hastings did that to me years ago. I phoned in the week between Christmas & New Year to tell them NOT to auto renew, They took a monthly payment at the end of Jan. The first girl I spoke asked why I didn't just cancel it .....  ??? WTF would I cancel a policy when there was about a week to go?
I've never used them since! (maybe I should let it go after nearly 20 years!  ::)

I found my insurance was more exspensive in Dec, so renewed in May saving a fair chunk. 8)

Also keep ringing the same company, different person on the phone often gets a discount.   :y

But as Opti mentioned, cheap 1st time , increased premium if they get away with it 2nd time, 3rd time is a piss take.

Some insurance companies won't quote you over the age of 80.

Those that do, on the comparison sites, quote anything from £800+ to £3500.

I've got full no claims,  and a ROSPA gold advanced driving certificate (which they don't recognise).

The premiums for the old and cautious tend to mirror the premiums for young and foolish.

I wonder if this is fair.

I currently occupy  the bit in the middle, so affordable (for now) :)

Unfortunately, older people who have accidents tend to have more spectacular ones than most. And unfortunately usually because they are no longer medically fit to drive but haven't been checked or assessed for conditions that might otherwise be assumed to be normal for age such as slower reactions or reduced spatial awareness.

This obviously has an impact on those in perfect health who have every right to remain independently mobile. Whether there's a case for claiming ageism on the part of insurers, or not, is a different question but individually, the cost of bringing such a claim would be more of a legacy than of direct benefit.
