Begging for camlocks in Warks/Northants!
« on: 19 September 2006, 09:33:41 »

Sorry if you may have read this in another post.  I just bought a 3.0 Elite on Saturday, it has 148K and records of one cambelt change at 80K.  I want to do the cambelt next weekend b/c my girlfriend will be out of town.  I have access to a shop, but I only have the most basic tools.  I can beg things like a torque wrench off of non-VX mates.  However, I was hoping that I could borrow cam locks and maybe some other stuff like the larger torx sockets from someone near by.  (I also thought it might be a good chance to start meeting people.)

I have been warned that they might all be out on loan already due to the recent release of the DVD.  If that is the case, then would anyone be interested in changing their solo plans for that weekend into a cambelt party?  I can drop my plans for using the shop and put my effort into bringing food and drink if that is the case!  I am in Warwickshire but would be happy to go anywhere between and around Birmingham, Leicester and Northampton.

Autovaux has reasonable rental terms but they can not promise them for a particular date.  I have pm'd TheBoy, because he may be the closest and I would like to do a quick fault code check.  Not everything throws a light, and I want to be reasonably sure that I am replacing everything that needs to be replaced while I am in there.

I am begging begging begging, and I would be equally appreciative of people's help on this!  I hate to be so needy as a newbie, but I really will feel a lot better once I have everything in place for next weekend.  I haven't had a car in almost a year (and me a petrol-head!), I love it and I am burning to be able to drive it without being afraid of the belt going.

Cheers,

Theo

Cheers! I just replied to your pm.

For everyone else, the urgency may be gone.  I'll keep you posted.  Anyone in the area wants to say hi, I made a post on the newbie forum.

Cheers,

Mine's in Rugeley, which is in your neck of the woods. Have a word/pm with John (djx) to see if he's finished with it.

OK, update;

Got the tools from TheBoy tonight.  Now also looks like I've kicked off a cambelt party.  So I should be set, and getting a few more done for good measure!

Just trying to reschedule my plans, then should be able to make proposed date. Do you have garage or just driveway?

Yeah, we need a cambelt party checklist;

4-car tent to set up in back of Tesco's - TheBoy
2 coolers and cans of beverage - Timbuk
red eyes, lawn chairs, and cam locks - Theo
games console, flatscreen and pizza- Bo Bo

It's a double garage half full of crap at the moment, I'll move what I can out of the way, should be plenty of room.

If you can just shove stuff to the back that would be fine.  We only need to poke the fronts in.

I could borrow a mini digger if it would help move the crap out of the way.

Grab chicken-boy and swing by!

I think I've got the basics, except for torque wrenches.  All the ones I know locally are loaned out or busted.  Apparently now I need 2 torque wrenches?!?  A tiny one and a normal one.  Oh, and a T45 for the oil, and E-sockets . . . good thing it's a big car to carry all the tools I need to get!  :P

Yeah, you'll need small torque wrench to do cam covers - IIRC, they are only around 10Nm (don't have book of lies here to confirm). And a man's torque wrench for normal stuff...

Yeah, doesn't seem to be on Mark DTM's list in the maintenance guide.  Machine Mart lists a 3/8" drive torque wrench for 16 quid, but range is 14-110 Nm.

Halford's has a 3/8" torque wrench with a range of 8-60 Nm.  Seems ideal, except that it's 50 quid!  Argh!  I don't want to spend that much on something that I will rarely if ever use again.  May not have much choice the way things are going.

Aha, score!  Mate in Kent who comes up this way on Thursdays is back from Greece and has a 4-20Nm torque wrench.  Sorted!

Now what is that torque supposed to be for the cam covers?  Maybe Marks DTM can be a pal and add it to the list in the maintenance guides?

Cheers,

Theo

He may bring that one too.  If not, it's only 15 quid at Argos.  Looks like same one / same price as Machine Mart.

Halfords has T45 for 3 quid, but no E-sockets.  Still on the search for those.

Yeah, looks like the one I tried to order locally.  Similar price.  Guess I'll call and see if they have it.

edit:  Yep, they've got it!  Guess a shopping trip to Cov is in the cards.

A full list of the tools required can be found here

http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1156070744

The torque settings are:

Crank pully               20 Nm

Water pump pully      Stage 1 - 8 Nm
                              Stage 2  - angle tighten a further 30deg
                              Stage 3 -  angle tighten a further 30deg

Power steering pully  Stage 1 - 20 Nm
                              Stage 2  - angle tighten a further 30deg
                              Stage 3 -  angle tighten a further 15deg

I think the covers are 10nm  but I will check when I get home

Yeah, that's the one I meant.  It's impressive.  May be getting long enough to where we might break it down into different repair jobs?  After I do mine, maybe I can help put together a pdf or sleeve for the DVD that has a list of tools and torque values.  Then can do the same for the cam cover gaskets, sans DVD.

He's carrying them round for me until I do the cambelt and can drive the car!  The run to Heathrow today might be a bit slow, but once we're on the M25 we'll still get slowed by traffic  ::)

Btw, any luck finding the torque settings for the cam covers?

OK, latest update;

Have almost all the tools.  Ended up with 2 sets of E-sockets?!  Don't ask.  Have 2 torque wrenches.  Still could use 1 more adapter.  I have a 3" extension for the 3/8" ratchet and a 5" extension for 1/2 drive, should I get a longer one for 3/8" drive?  Also need to get T45 to do the oil.

Have all of the parts, except for the 16 o-rings.  Will go by VX dealer tomorrow to pick those up.  Have oil, filter, coolant, rad flush, carb cleaner, and degreaser.  Will get more paper towels and liquid detergent.  Might need to get pan to catch oil.

Plan to spend time tomorrow organising and printing out all of the instructions, and the advice that people have been giving me.  Also plan to watch DVD and take notes.  I can not count on Internet access or the ability to see the DVD where I will be working.

Lastly I will be charging my mobile and entering numbers, so be forewarned!   :o  Eh, I've done SOHC cambelts on inline engines in much tighter installations, this shouldn't be too bad.  ;)  My biggest concern is that the front crank seal is bad and that I won't be able to get one until Monday.  :-/

Double check your sump plug is T45, and not the older 19mm bolt (possible someone's changed it).

Good Luck!

Just watched the DVD (had to reboot in Mac OS?).  Can I spin the motor without 1/2" ratchet?  Just abuse the torque wrench?  Also, what size spanner do I need for the pipe that goes to that thing next to the throttle cable?

Can't answer the 1/2" Q.

For the EGR, I always use pipe pliers or adjustable spanner, as its bigger than my biggest spanner (22mm). 19mm spanner for vacuum hose, 19mm and 17mm (I think) for fuel lines if you take off injector stuff (when you do cam gaskets...)
