Knocking noise from Seicento
« on: 31 January 2011, 08:43:33 »

Bought this little seicento the weekend. Guy told me there was a knocking noise coming fron the n/s/f when turning right. Indeed there is. Fairly pronounced. At first was thinking CV boot joint but looking in the service history the n/sf was replaced in 2007 and the o/s inf 2009. Now has led me to believe it may be something else? Top mounts or Drive shafts possibly?

Not very mechanical so it may need someone in the know to drive it and give their opinion?

Sounds like a CV joint would be my first point of call. Was it the joint replaced or just the boot? Is it/they split again or come adrift?

Not split nor have they come away. Like i say its only when i turn right. Just trying to see what i may need to replace. the n/s/f that is knocking was done 4 years ago and dont know how long they last.

Anything else that could be the reason?

That seems to be the general consensus now. the kit is less than £20 so will start there i think.

But was it just the boot replaced or the whole joint ;) ;)

The boot may well be fine still but if it was driven without the grease for a period of time (quite likely) then the actual joint is probably on its way out ;)

That sounds like a boot kit, not a complete CV joint kit?

Thats the norm when a new one is fitted they don't put enough grease on them. That reminds me swmbo has a puma with one gone but while she keeps complaining i will leave it longer. ;D ;D

Cheers Henry. Postage was £7 so they may get a few quid out that but very good price anyway.

Here she is anyway. few dings and marks but generally clean with no rust, 74500 miles, good history MOT December for £375

CV joint is more of a clicking noise than a knock.

Although I've known them knock when really bad. My Ashtray got so bad it started "grabbing" the steering just before it went bang and left me stranded... Mind you, that was when I was working breakdown and recovery and that van really did take some stick :-X :-X ::) ::)

Do beware though, many of these cheap CV joints are pretty poor quality and on some, I was convinced they had used Maltesers rather than ball bearings!
