Whilst not raising a tear, but one I found touching (and only reminded as I just saw it on the EPG whilst setting a recording) is Goodnight Mister Tom. Possibly as there are some parallels with my step granddad (without the dark elements though), I felt I could relate to it more than perhaps a non-sentimental old fart like me normally would.
Also, having recently seen 12 years a slave, that was also touching, but that's more the horrific nature of the film, and that it was based on a book, which itself was a biography of the author.
