sheared oil sump pan bolt
« on: 06 May 2013, 16:19:53 »

Not the sump plug, but one of the bolts that hold the pan.

I refitted the oil sump pan yesterday after it was weeping through the bolts. This time I left it overnight for the silicone to cure. I tried to torque the bolts but my wrench wouldn't click at the desired setting so they were slightly overtightened. In my quest for perfection, today I slackened off the bolts and re torqued them but ended up shearing one.  :(

I don't think its leaking (but I didn't check) shall I leave or or try to drill it out and replace the nut with the pan in situ?

I think you need to bin your torque wrench ........  ::) ::)
If it was me, I'd leave it if it doesn't leak, but I wouldn't old my breath that it doesn't. If you've sheared the head of a bolt that you've just put in, you might be lucky that the remaining bit of bolt unscrews fairly easily. Try turning it using the point of a small screw driver or scriber .......

I didn't do it up that tight. Tried to tighten them all to 20nm and after tightening a few bolts successfully I got a rough idea of what 20nm felt like. I was going easy on them too. The silicone went on yesterday and the bolt sheared today so hopefully the silicone will stop it from leaking

I thought they were all tiny 6mm bolts so only need 8nm :-\

[Edit] Haynes says:
8nm + 30 degrees for sump
15nm for "Casting-to-cylinder block/oil pump bolts"
40nm for "Casting flange-to-transmission bolts"
[second edit] must type faster[/edit]

Put a M6 bolt in a vice, put your 10mm spanner on the head & turn it till you shear it ...... it takes a fair bit of doing  ;) ;) ;)

8Nm is a lot, lot less than you think, its barely nipped up.

I have Halfords Torque Wrenches, do quite a good job  :y

They are M8 bolts and 20Nm was recommended by a member here who worked at the VX factory putting these things together. I did overtighten them the first time though, so probably weakened them then...probably  ::)

Haven't tried to unscrew it, but how? The holes are too small to get pliers in. The only way appears to be drill it out

Symes, Wouldn't I still need to take the remaining part of the bolt out to use helicoil?

Edit, yes you are right Andy, I'm getting mixed up with the size of the head and thread. It has a 8mm hex head and thread is M6 and there are 20 of the buggers

M6 bolt has a 10mm hex head.
M8 bolt has a 13mm hex head.
M10 bolt has a 17mm hex head.
M12 bolt has a 19mm hex head.  :y :y :y

I agree with your post Andy but in this case you are wrong (not that it matters). It's definitely a 8mm head. I still have the socket attached to the ratchet extension. Maybe they are different on MFL models? Or maybe its M5 thread?

Either way I might try to drill it out next weekend if I can find the courage.
