My V6 dont like less than a quarter tank
« on: 14 September 2013, 19:31:52 »

This has me stumped.

My meg 2.6 v6 cd has developed what I think is an unusual starting problem. With between a full tank and a quarter tank she starts and runs smooth as normal. When shes on the quarter tank or less she struggles to start, sometimes taking a good couple minutes to fire up but when she does eventually start she runs as normal, smooth and with instant throttle response.

Also, she only struggles to fire up on the quarter tank if shes sat for an hour or 2 but if shes running and I shut her off then turn the key she starts as normal.

Ive replaced the fuel filter and also checked the fuel pump that seems to be working as normal.

Any ideas.

Thanks in advance.

If pump and filter are right only one thing left to check it is tank vent valve possibly does not open when should do. Try to start with opened tank cap if right than tank vent valve is source of trouble.

Good luck mate !

A weak or otherwise failing pump seems most likely to me.

Pattern ones cheap enough, but might not last too long... 3 years/120k from my last pattern one...

If an estate, they can get very fussy with low fuel levels ::)

Local motor factors best bet, but ring VX for a price first :y

They sometimes surprise with things that you expect to be expensive actually being quite reasonable  :y (and vice versa ::))

You say that ::) mine has previously cut out whilst stopped on a bit of left camber, no light on, and about 60 miles on the range :o

Shoved it round the corner on the starter motor to a level patch and it fired up first time ::)

But usually only happens in the red zone of the gauge :y

Ok, little bit weird, sunday evening seen her start first turn of the key so not wanting to push my luck I headed to the garage and put her up to the half tank. Ended up having to take a run to the shops so by the time I got home it was back to the 1/4 mark. Monday morning she started first turn so drove to work which took her to just below the 1/4. On leaving work expecting her to turn over a good few times she ended up starting first turn of the key. So took her the long way home and managed to get the gauge on the red. left her all night and she started perfectly again in the morning. Just wondering if me changing the fuel filter and cleaning and fiddling with the pump has maybe disturbed the culprit.

So far all is good, ive also got her booked in for new timing kit which will put my mind at rest as shes on 81k. Think I need to take out the police lights before I get in trouble though as I have a habit of scaring the life out of the local boy racers  ;D

Right, on my way home from work and while on a single track road I pulled over to let an oncoming car passed, while I was in the passing place the car instantly just cut out. the fuel was sitting just at the top of the red and after turning her over a good few times she started and run as normal.

Any ideas guys.

Cheers
