All that makes me want to do is take up gliding again.... it's fantastic!

Mind you there seemed to be a struggle to get it upto speed initially which a sky winch doesn't (0-60 in approx 2 secs and then holds ituntil you reach about 1000ft)

I must say, they did well to get enough traction on grass (whole launch was in 2nd gear, speed peaked at 70MPH  :o so the french piece of crud got a bit of a spanking).

For comparison, here's how it should be done. Note the slightly better acceleration on the ground run and the angle of climb.

And a vid of the beast at the other end.

Fascinating and very impressive. 8-) 8-)

Does the cable ever break during a launch, and should it do, is the result a recoverable situation every time for the pilot?

Yes, and yes.... I've had it happen to me in my younger days when I was able to go gliding... Really want to go again now :-/ :-/

Should add that a cable break can be a little worrying though, especially if it's your first solo flight ::) ::) ::)

The way I was tought was to assess the height and either land straight ahead or perform a "short circuit" to come back in and land :y :y

Yep. First thing is not to rotate into a steep climb until you are high enough to sort it out if it does fail and until you are happy the glider is fast enough and accelerating normally.

If it breaks, lower the nose quickly and establish approach speed, check the cable has gone and assess where you can land. Typically, the options are straight ahead if you're low, turn downwind if you're too high for straight ahead and maybe continue the turn and land across the airfield or, if you have plenty of height, a circuit and back to where you launched.

It can bite you on the @rse, like most flying activities, if you rotate too quickly into a steep climb, or if you try to manoevre before recovering a safe airspeed.

Here's how it should look:

Hmmm.... for us non flying landlubbers, I would of thought the best course of action would be shoving the sh*t out of the cockpit faster than it was coming out of your trousers?  ;) ;D :y

If you push forward hard enough you don't even need to be inverted, as I found out on my first flight. ::)
