i bought the stuff now, and im awaiting a call from Castrol tomorrow
0w/30 is there recommendation, lets see what their press office say
will also speak to some mechanics tomorrow that i know
after all, they SHOULD know what they are talking about, and so should Castrol

my oil gets changed every 5000 miles anyway

i take it that at my next oil change its OK to go back to 10w/40 then?
wasnt sure if you could "mix n match" after you have had a different "viscosity" in ya car?

No disrespect to the above referenced mechanics, but unless they happen to be well educated in the (complex) properties of oil and familar with the chemistry of the particular oil in question,  I doubt their opinion would be any more valid than anyone else.

Hardly surprising that Castrol are recommending the oil that costs a fortune is it ;)   As discussed on a similar subject yesterday, I think spending the money on more frequent oil and filter changes using good quality semi synth such as the Vx one is the way to go.

Anyway, you pay your money and take your choice, so just personal opinion of course.

Hi Guys, i popped in to Vauxhall today to ask a Mechanics poit of view, he said i CAN use 0w-30, but he would always use 10w-40 as all of you said, so......... i am taking it back and getting Magnatec 10w-40  :y
will get some cash back aswell, so nothing lost

i also got this Email from Castrol this morning, this is what it says

Hi Wayne

The website will always recommend the best possible oil for your vehicle
- so the EDGE 0W-30 being fully synthetic would offer the best in
performance and protection - however, if the engine has done a fair few
miles, or burns a bit of oil, using a thin oil would probably not be the
best thing for the engine as it would tend to find any wear and could be
used up faster.

So - if the engine is in good condition, has been well maintained and
doesn't use any oil then the EDGE 0W-30 would be an excellent choice -
but if the engine is a bit tired and needs frequent top ups then a more
viscous product, such as the EDGE Turbo Diesel 5W-40 ( ignore the Diesel
bit of the name it's fine for petrol ) if you want the performance and
protection of a fully synthetic, or the Magnatec 10W-40 if you prefer a
semi synthetic would probably offer a better solution.

Hope that helps

Kind regards

my reply was this

Hi Andy
thanks for your fast reply
in reference to my car, it has done just under 62000 miles and has had oil changes every 6000 miles, it doesnt burn oil whatsoever,  what do you think?

2nd Reply from Castrol

Hi again Wayne

In that case, your engine should be in good order and I think that the
0W-30 would be a very good choice - if the car doesn't like it, it will
soon tell you! usually with some smoke!
If you are really unsure about using the fully synthetic - the Magnatec 10W-40
would also be fine for you.

Kind regards

I think we've seem issues with some oils being more prone to clogging the breathers on short journeys, so keep an eye on that as well.  The Vauxhall oil does seem better (but not immune) in this respect.

 ;D

I love oil adverts! Pure publicity stunts. First car you see is doing a doughnut. Discerning customer, clearly! Probably cares as much for the life of his engine as he does for the life of his tyres.

So, I can sleep easy knowing that if my engine catches fire overnight I can drain the oil and put it in another car, which I can then rev to the limiter with no load for 72 hours. My neighbours are going to love me.  ;D

The fact is, it's not possible to tell from the driving seat what your oil is doing so they can claim what they like.

I see from Castrol's website that Castrol's Magnatec is exactly the same spec as Vx's own oil....

Am I missing out on an oil thread here?  :o

At any rate, as others have said, frequent oil changes are more important than the actual oil or grade - as long as the oil is within spec obviously i.e. 0 or 5 or 10W and 30 or 40, and made by a reputable manufacturer.... but we all know that by now, I gave up on using Mobil-1 and went right back to Vx-own semi 10W-40....

Incidentally, I noticed in Halfrauds the other day you can now get Mobil 1 in 5L containers  :o That's almost (but not quite) enough to do a complete oil change  :o

Still silly money though  ;D

I found that with the mineral oils that Esso Superlube burnt less than Vauxhall. So when my free supply finished I went back to Esso and use less.

I think I used to use 15-40 mineral oil - can't remember this is over 10 years ago.
