A water pump is a water pump is a water pump...?
« on: 18 June 2022, 23:38:21 »

Evening folks,

On my shopping list is a new water pump for the X30XE, whilst I'm doing the cambelt. A perusal of ebay offers up choices from First Line, QH and Borg & Beck, among others. Are they all much of a muchness these days, or even exactly the same but in different boxes? Or is there a preferable (readily available) alternative you'd recommend ?

Nothing particularly conclusive turned up in Search...  :y

Cheers, Stu

I've had great results with Circoli from Euro Car Parts. About £30... and seems well built, without the thin pulley that some cheap pumps have....

For Omega V6 parts you can also check Saab V6 parts as the engines are the same.

Here's a genuine Saab pump that cross references the GM Opel part numbers for the pump you want. So should be the same. Confirm for yourself.

Buying from the USA, as suggested above, will involve foreign currency transaction charges, high postage charges (assuming they will ship it out of the USA at all, some will only ship to the lower 48 states), a Royal Mail clearance fee if posted, else an even larger clearance fee if couriered and VAT on UK arrival payable to RM before delivery. You'll probably avoid the duty charges since it's less than £130. So a last resort really.

It's £30 plus shipping.

Hardly a big deal for a genuine waterpump. But if you insist, they are readily available her for £59... If you CBA to look :-X

Which makes zero sense when you can buy genuine for similar money... (or better if you include replacing the Chinesey crap three or four times more often)

Thanks for the considered opinion folks  :y

In summary, I'd take the consensus as avoid the bottom of the barrel - potentially with plastic or thin metal bits - as it's just false economy. There's a variety of mid-range options just a slight notch up the price scale, but with the benefit for me of your real world experience to give names to look for.

I'm not paying daft amounts for one, as it's a routine enough item that's been widely used across different cars, which means there's plenty of options. Other folks can if they want, I've no problem with that. Maybe they've got a high-revving, turbo-nutter engine, or they're just really pernickity, but mine's just a standard engine that came out of the Ellesmere Port plant by the thousands. Nor am I buying one in from the States - partly because of that, partly because I don't want to wait a month for it to maybe turn up, partly because I don't want customs forms, and partly because I disagree with needlessly adding to the global logistics chain. I'm not kidding myself that I'm saving trees or anything, it's just the last resort isn't my first choice  ;)

I have had more issues buying from Carparts4less/Eurocrapparts than from the US.

So it's horses for courses IMHO.

I would rather buy an OE one for a sensible price and wait a week or two than drive to Essex to buy one for half the price. And if you want OE quality parts, then buy OE parts. Especially if you can buy them for half the PugVaux price.

How exactly is the Saab branded part any less OE than the Cadillac / AC Delco part? At the relevant time Saab was a GM brand and the V6 used was the same 54 Deg V6 made in Ellesmere port that was used in the Omega B/B2 and the Cadillac Catera. A genuine Saab pump at £30 delivered and it's already in the UK, that's the same or better priced than the aftermarket versions.

Buy the one, which is cheapest, having used OE, and pattern, the only difference is price.

As soon as I find a part that falls within my mental venn diagram for convenience(including finding and acquiring), price and quality I buy it and move on. I can't imagine buying a common and cheap part like this from America, when I can get it from any local motor factor and examine the thing before I pay for it. Or order it from ebay at 19:57 on Sunday and fit it when I get home on Tuesday - total time sourcing the pump might run to a couple of minutes.

Ironically it's the parts that were always GM only that cause the most problems, as GM(any manufacturer) don't care about cars that are at least twenty years old, and have been devaluing the stock and getting rid of it. So if you think you're going to need a self reciprocating side fumbling dingle arm at some point, it's probably worth getting one now. I wouldn't be surprised if the normal aftermarket service parts - pumps, plugs, filters, belts, pullies, wishbones etc - outnumber the remaining cars by a large margin. That's how the classic parts specialists can still supply NOS for 60 year old cars, although rubber parts need to be carefully inspected for condition before buying.

Your doing it again... Your talking sense, and that doesn't work when it comes to buying Genuine. You know the rules.

Sit on tinterweb for hours looking for parts, ask lots of people if it's good, then think about it for another week, then only maybe buy the 1st one you looked at, because it's cheapest, then get abuse because it's not genuine... ;D

Looks very GM   :y

It just needs a Vauxhall white box to go in and a Vauxhall blue sticker for the said white box  :D
Vauxhall would probably charge you about £100 for that packaging   :P
