I suspect its something like Ford used (still?) to do with their front headlights......turn the sidelights on....they didnt have sidelight bulbs...just used to put 6v through the main headlight bulbs instead.

That would have been "dim dip" which was a legal requirement at some point. It was a fantastic idea -- whenever the ignition is on and sidelights are switched on, it also switched the headlights on through a seperate control system to illuminate them at low power. They were much more visible than candle power sidelights, so you could still see the idiots who refuse to switch on their dipped beam even in the middle of night time.

Quite why they got rid of this system I'll never know, we're back to squinting to pick out the tiny candle light bulbs on cars with only sidelights on in the dark :-/ Legistlators never fail to amaze me.

Dim-Dip came in around 1986 IIRC, and diminished a few years ago.  If people are too stupid to turn on their dipped beam (or turn off their effing foglights), they shouldn't be allowed to drive (or live) imho  >:(

Manufacturers have already decided people are too stupid to turn their headlights with ever increasing 'auto lights on' function  ;D

Im sure in a while they will soon have a 'fog' sensor too  :D

Hope you had a turn in the passenger seat sometimes, otherwise one arm would be bigger than the other.

I had it on my 88 Astra and found the same as you Martin.  Interestingly, this is on both my 98 transits, but not the Cavalier or Omega.

It'd help if a lot of the half wits on the road turned any of their lights on! It amazes me the number of drivers who seem to be of the idea that as they can see where they're going they don't need lights on.  >:(
