Whoever bought it new didn't get their money's worth. Less than 3000 miles per annum. Thought you may have learned your lesson with the merc, but carry on, I could do with (another) laugh.

I believe the engine is taken from a Datsun 370Z.

For those with no interest in cars it can also be specified with the engine from a canal boat.

However, until hell decides to freeze over I won't be taking the 'derv' option.

I don't particularly dislike them, but.. for me an Omega replacement should be

cheap(er than equivalent opposition)
maintainable from a large dealer network
badgeless (so not one of the 'big boys' Audi, BMW, Merc, Jag)
Surprisingly spacious and practical

Infiniti/Nissan comes under this, Lexus used to, though they've really become a premier brand and shaken off their Toyota roots in most eyes now. Skoda or Seat, too, I'd see as a contender, to a lesser degree a VW. (I do like Phaetons) There's not much out there these days. Rewind to the good old 90s and you had to choose from...

Peugeot 605
Citroen XM, or go a bit older - CX
Vauxhall Carlton/Senny/Omega

Now there's really no non-swanky brands making executive cars any more. The Omega was about the last, apt, considering where it sits in the Greek Alphabet.

Looks nice, great engine (related to the 370Z but with different valve train IIRC), should be bulletproof reliability wise..

..shame "we" (Japan, in this case) only got the semi skimmed engine and didn't get the V8 as an option like the Americans.

Peugeot 605? Utterly forgettable in every way; you arrive at your destination with a vague feeling of travelling, but no more. I would also have mentioned the Laguna, but you would have remembered all of the breakdowns on route.

As for mass-market large cars, they are still with us. Mondeos and Insignias are larger than the Granada and Omega that allegedly haven't been replaced. They cost about the same in real terms too.

The premium manufacturers(a ghastly phrase) have done such a good job on their mid-to-large cars that the full-sized efforts are largely superfluous; a 7series compares badly to a 5, in the same way an A8 does to an A6, which is why you hardly ever see the bigger cars.

Another reason why large saloon cars are less common is the increase in cars like the Galaxy, Zafira and Espace, plus the larger 4x4ish things. These better fulfill the needs that caused family buyers to settle on a Scorpio/similar when they were all that was available.

I quite like the Infiniti brand, although it is only a posh Nissan.

Drove a customer's FX a few years back... The oil burner pulls well and for a 4x4 type thing is felt well planted on the road. Mind you, it had only done a few thousand miles

I quite like the Infinity.

For it to be a serious contender as the Omega replacement there needs to be a big pool available so that in 20 years time Diamond Black Geezer 2, EMD 2etc have a good pool of scrapped cars, accident damaged and so on. Mind you I bet they aren't easy to work on your self.
