Omega General Help / 2.6 - No Gear Selector Lights / Dead TCM?
« on: 05 June 2023, 11:43:04 »
Hi Folks, hope everyone is well. Just a quick query if I may please.

I am almost certain I have missed something really stupid, and I've not investigated in any great detail due to running out of time, and having to go on a short notice trip abroad, today. It's one of those things that I decided to walk away from, because if I look at it with a fresh head, I'll probably spot the problem straight away!

But, I won't get chance to look before the weekend, so I thought I'd instigate a discussion in the meantime, which may give me some ideas.

Background (you'll see in a moment why this is relevent) - in September I bought a 2.6 (2002 model) unseen from Arsebook marketplace. Cheap enough that I didn't care if it blew up on the way home. 98k miles, some faded paint and a dent in a rear door, but otherwise excellent condition.

The first 60 miles of the drive home were uneventful. I noticed that the 1-2 gearchange was a bit more pronounced than the others (although not rough) but nothing else stood out. After then, the battery charging light started to illuminate - first, dimly, but got brighter and brighter. Then, the dash lit up like a Christmas tree - ABS, TC, Engine lights, I can't recall exactly which ones, but it was like blackpool illuminations.

The engine kept running, though, so I ran the gauntlet and parked up in a safe place about 10 miles from home.

The next day, I fitted a fresh battery. It started up, but the charging light was still firmly on. A multimeter across the battery showed it was not charging at all. Whilst I don't believe in co-incidences, it was fine for the first 60 miles, so I can only assume the alternator threw in the towel half way home. I also noticed some small brown deposits in the header tank, which were definitely oil contamination, so it looked like the oil cooler was in the very early stages of failing.

I took it off the road at this point and took it to bits to replace cambelt kit, oil cooler kit, water pump, aux belt and tensioner, new alternator, radiator, thermostat, HBV, rocker cover gaskets, spark plugs, oil and filter. I also changed the header tank because the old one was manky and wouldn't clean very well. I disconnected all of the engine loom to do the work, apart from the connections under the car (gearbox and lambdas).

Yesterday I finally got it all finished. The engine runs very sweetly indeed and I'm pleased - but there is a small problem.

I noticed the engine light (with the spanner) and the TC lights were illuminated. A stop and restart, and they soon came back. I then noticed that there were NO lights at all, illuminated on the gear selector area. For example, if it's in park, there would be an orange light next to P. There is nothing at all there. Sport and winter mode don't work, so it appears the Transmission is in limp mode (which it wasn't before).

Interestingly, the temperature gauge on the dahsboard also isn't working, and I am certain the spade connector is correctly home.

Obviously, I need to read the codes / see what can be seen on live data, but I didn't have time to configure the laptop last night.

Things I have checked:

Following plugs, all securely home (reseated to be sure):

Selector switch
Both plugs to the gearbox, the square one in the front sump, and round one to the rear.
Speed sensor at rear of gearbox.
All lambdas, in correct connectors.
(none of the above was disturbed during the work).

I can also confirm the following connectors are firmly home and correctly connected:

Crank Sensor
Cam Sensor
Both Coil Packs
Both Knock Sensors
CTS
Carbon Valve
Fuel Injectors
Throttle Body DBW connector
MAF
Both Rams
Auxialiary coolant pumps
All radiator sensors

The three round connectors by the battery were my prime suspect, I have taken apart, double and triple checked them. They are clean, and securely home, all with a satisfying click.

I've also checked F6, (80 amp TCM fuse in the engine bay) which is intact.

The body earths under the battery tray - present and correct (and tight)

I have also checked that the battery terminals are secure, and that all of the smaller cables that connect to them, are correctly affixed (I compared it to my 3.2, they are all there, and correctly home).

It's almost as if the TCM is completely dead / doesn't have power.

I will plug in the poor mans Tech2 and see what it's telling me if anything, but I would be grateful for any ideas in the meantime :y

Just on the offchance - does anyone please have a set of late v6 heads for sale, or even more unlikely, does anyone have any inlet valves kicking around?

I get a feeling my new project is going to need 12 of ‘em ……

General Car Chat / Bought another
« on: 24 May 2023, 15:24:37 »
I’ve not yet quite finished the 2.6 project …. And now I’ve bought another Omega!

A 2003, 3.2 V6 came up on Facebook marketplace. Only a few miles from me.

Owner seems a very genuine guy. He said “the water pump pulley broke, I replaced the pulley and unit, but checked the cambelt and it had slipped / sheared teeth or similar.

Plan is to attempt a fix. Will do head-off work if needs be although it’s slow progress with my back. It’s had a lot of work including new sills for last MOT.

Will be making every effort to get it running again, would be criminal to break a 3.2 if it can be fixed.

£500. Can’t loose and will enjoy the summer tinkering now the 2.6 is almost done.

I’ll have to sell one of them in due course. Can’t keep two. Tempted to keep the 2.6, it’s not so good paint wise, but mechanically I’ve replaced everything imaginable under the Bonnet!

General Car Chat / L322 Rangie Problem
« on: 03 April 2023, 16:33:42 »
My Trusty 2002, 4.4 V8 Petrol Rangie, of the L322 variety.

Last week or the week before, I lent it to the good lady for 24 hours while I did a job on her car.

She sent me a message from work, saying "It's doing it's naughty dashboard thing again". (I've never seen it do anything odd).

Anyway, I had a look when she got back. There are no dash lights at all when turning the key, not the usual handbrake light, engine light - nothing illuminates. The petrol and temp gauges don't move.

When the car starts, a single ABS light comes on the dash.

I've also noticed the power steering is much heavier at slower speeds. It's still assisted, but I think it's lost it's servotronics.

I have kit that will read the various ECU's on this car, so I will try and connect to them and see what it's saying. Can't do it for a few days though, as I left it at my Uncles house when working on his car  :(

I should add, in addition to the speedo, it's not logging any miles at all

General Discussion Area / Man Flu
« on: 31 March 2023, 13:12:52 »
I fear I am not long for this world. Two days ago, I woke up with a sore throat. Yesterday, sore throat, aching, tired and lethargic.

Today, my nose is streaming like a tap and burning up, I feel like there's a concrete block on my head, my eyes are running, I've lost a lot of my appetite, and I am as grumpy as %$&^.

I made myself a hot-toddy at midday, by mixing the juice of half a lemon, a generous dollop of honey, a glug of whiskey and some boiling water.

It was lovely while it lasted and soothed my throat and nose, but I can't keep drinking them one after the other. Can I?  ::)

I think I'm going to bed  >:( :-[

General Car Chat / Shifty Garage and Small Claims Court
« on: 29 March 2023, 11:20:46 »
I have lodged a case in the Small Claims court against a local garage and MOT testing station. I've done it more as a matter of principle, than to recoup the cost, because they blatantly tried to rip me off.

I took our 2011 Astra for MOT last week. I made my request clear - "Please can you do an MOT test, and let me know the result". He told me the MOT would be at 10am the next morning. I left the car with them, so they had it first thing next day.

I checked the MOT History website at around 10am and it had already been done. A years pass, with advisories for a bulb, and the rear brake pads "wearing thin".

I thought "Great, I'll go and get it later" and thought no more of it.

About 3pm, call from the garage "We're just finishing up doing your rear brakes, they needed doing, to get through the MOT test. Car will be ready for you in half an hour".

So I got myself down there in a flash. The car was not in the workshop, but parked behind other cars, stone cold.

I went into "reception" and spoke to the only staff member I could see, the stereotypical spotty Yoof.

I asked him the obvious questions:

1) If it needed brake pads to get through the MOT, how come it went through the MOT with an advisory?

2) If I needed brake pads to get through - why isn't there one result which is a failure, and then a further result for the re-test where the pass is then issued?

3) If it needed brake pads to pass the MOT, how come the MOT pass was issued at 10am, and you phoned me at 3 to say you were still doing the brake pads?

4) Why didn't you call me to discuss any work needed, because I haven't authorised anything you've done, apart from the MOT?

He looked like he didn't even understand the purpose of my questions, let alone have the ability to answer them. He just kept repeating "You'll have to speak to the boss but he aint here. No cash no car"

I begrudgingly paid the bill using a card, because I know I can't take the car legally until I have (the law is an ass sometimes). I also refused to sign the invoice as they asked, and took my unsigned copy with me. Interestingly, in the signature box, it says "I authorise the above work to be undertaken" which of course I never did.

I emailed the garage my questions that night, and the boss called me the next day. I was driving and he left a voicemail. It was basically a load of abusive hot air,  borderline criminally abusive, where I was basically told to go forth and multiply and wouldn't be getting anything back.

So I've taken it straight to small claims - exhibiting his voicemail digitally, so the Judge can hear for himself why my attempt to sort it informally didn't work.

I've asked for a partial refund - the labour charge for doing the pads (I'd have never agreed to pay that, I'd have done it myself) plus the difference between the extortionate amount the garage charged me for the pads, vs what I would have paid for them had I purchased them online to fit myself.

All of course backed with the appropriate evidence.

We shall await the outcome!

General Car Chat / One for TB’s “list”?
« on: 10 March 2023, 14:30:57 »
Saw this post on the Omega Owners Facebook group today.

An Omega driver is filming himself driving at speeds of up to 70mph on a two way road in an attempt to demonstrate a misfire.

Please god tell me nobody on here is that daft  ::)

I have a set of GM V6 cam covers here with O rings. £60 posted.
V6 cambelt kit (static lower idler) for later models. £100 posted.

£140 for both. Surplus to requirements. They came with a car I purchased in 2021, so are “new old stock” but stored indoors and absolutely fine.

Bank transfer or PayPal are fine :y

General Discussion Area / Football (Betting) question
« on: 13 February 2023, 07:57:54 »
Football always used to bore me to tears, up until the age of 32, which is when I was off work for a year after breaking my back/neck. I then started watching it through boredom (I don't have a team).

Once a week on a Saturday or Sunday morning, I will sometimes look at the fixtures with my cup of tea, and place a small bet on a match or two (tenner at most).

This Saturday, I placed an "accumulator" bet, where I made a number of selections which all have to happen to win the bet. It was a stupidly long shot bet, (£10 at odds of 75/1), including Arsenal and Brentford and West Ham / Chelsea to Score Draw on Saturday, and Man United to win yesterday.

To my amazement I logged in to check it this morning, and everything so far has won. The only remaining outcomes I need to win the £750, are Liverpool to win against Everton tonight, and over 8 corners in the game. I've also got the chance of going down the pub with a couple of lads to watch it, so this should make it fun!

The problem is, I am too much of a chicken to risk losing the potential of £750, BUT I can't cash out for some profit. The app says it's "unavailable".

So I am thinking of placing some "insurance" type bets on the potential range of other outcomes, to increase my chances of winning some profit, without risking any more money.

The alternative outcomes, are:

1) Liverpool win, under 9 corners (odds 5.04) = £100 returns £504

2) Everton or draw, over 8 corners (odds 2.93) = £100 returns £293

3) Everton or draw, under 9 corners (odds 6.52) = £100 returns £652

So - I could put all of those bets on, so whatever the outcome, I win something. As crazy as it sounds to "gamble" £310, the reality is, it's not a gamble, because

- If the main bet wins, I will still profit a total of £440

- Alternative outcome 1 means I will still profit a total of £194

- Alternative outcome 2 means I will lose £17, which isn't a life changing amount to lose.

- Alternative outcome 3 means I will profit £342.

What would you do?

A mate has suggested I could also wait and see if Liverpool score first / see how many corners there are in the first half, as it may significantly lengthen the odds for the "insurance bets".

Or shall I just go down the pub, shout at the TV and hope for the best. It was only a tenner, right?

This is not a for-sale thread, but more me musing about what to do with my Omega - having seen a scrap yard have just offered £800 for one!

I am curious, what is the market currently like for trading / buying / selling Omegas? I am not asking the question blindly, I have tried to gauge it from forums and auction websites, and such, but I'm finding it hard to do, because there are so few for sale, and some of the prices seem (to me) to be unrealistically high.

I have an Omega at home, that I'm under pressure to do something with. It's a 2.6 V6 CDX Auto, and has been sat here since September and hasn't moved. I bought it for either £500 or £550 (can't recall which) with an oil cooler failure (caught very early). and a shagged alternator.

Just after buying it, I stripped the engine down (cooling system, rad, stat, oil cooler) etc all out. I've also removed the timing belt kit and w/pump ready for a new one to be fitted. (I left the cam covers on, and the plugs in, to prevent moisture ingress while it stands).

Since I took it apart, a few months ago, I have totally lost interest. The cold weather probably hasn't helped, but I literally, cannot be arsed to put it back together. No motivation at all. I know it would usually be a leisurely days work for me, but I have been down in the dumps and fed up for ages and I have zero inclination to work on an Omega and don't see that changing anytime soon.

It's a shame, because I have bought loads of new parts for it. New shiny/clear header tank, stat, cambelt kit and pump, cam cover gaskets, seals, oil, filter, ATF etc.

I'm going to have to do something with it soon, either flog it as is, for a discounted rate, or, fix it and either enjoy it / or sell it as a working car with a full MOT. It does still have some MOT, and is also still insured even thought it's off the road. It's not rusty, but sitting there without moving is likely to soon change that.

Apart from some dull paintwork, it's a cracking example. Immaculate inside, none of the common visible rust patches, but is let down by a faded / dull boot and roof lid, and a crease in the OSR door. But, without many around, they are small matters. I think it's had two owners, the first chap had it for many years, and there is a folder of paperwork and bills coming to what must be tens of thousands. 98k on the clock.

I drove it home from MK and did a further 20 or so miles in it, the engine is sweet and it drives as expected.

My temptation is to just get shot for spares/repairs.  But, I am also wondering if, come the spring and I feel a bit better, I might bitterly regret doing so  :-\

General Car Chat / MOT Inconsistencies
« on: 25 December 2022, 19:43:59 »
Took my 180k 20 year old L322 V8 LPG Rangie for it's MOT a couple of days ago.

I was (joyfully) amazed that it only failed on an offisde front lower suspension arm balljoint.

The year before, I had loads of advisories for almost all the front bushes and balljoints (both sides) play in track rods, CV Joint / Boot, leak of exhaust gasses, brake discs, corroded brake pipes, etc etc.

I've not done any of those items since the 2021 test, and have done 7k miles since that MOT.

Yet, none of those items were picked up on the new test - not even as advisories.

How can there be so much inconsistency between MOT garages? I can only think different testers have different thresholds for what constitutes "play" or "wear" etc?
