Time to replace my R320 soon. Replacement needs to be big enough to tow a 1850kg max caravan, I want a 'proper' torque converter auto. Big heavy stuff is becoming a dinosaur these days so the choice is getting limited. I'd like a Jaguar like Lord Opti but my wallet doesn't stretch that far. ;)
I test drove a 16 plate Jeep Grand Cherokee today. Didn't seem too bad but the touch screen that seems to do everything kinda puts me off .... why can't there be a switch for the ???? instead of scrolling through various menus & sub menus? The FIAT bit puts me off too :-\
I've a test drive booked next week in a 14 plate ML350 that surprisingly has quite a few bells & whistles.
Head or tails? :-\ :-\ :-\

Down in these parts many large caravans are towed around on the rear of Ford Transits, or equivilant trucks, from many a lovely field to another lovely field. :D :D ;)
-
Don't think you can go wrong with an ML 350 lovely vehicle.

Are you sure? I thought they had the Asin Warner 8 speed jobbie rather than dsg

If the Touareg has a proper slushbox, that would be my choice. Stood next to one yesterday and the are fickin huge (but, maybe, not as huge as your current merc :-\)

They are according to one of the mechs I collared at the local VW dealers. A mates V10 is apparently a torque converter :-\

My mate had a Towrag and it was a cracking car! :y
After that he had an Audi Q8 which I think is built on the same platform and that was a great car as well. :)

I ran one for a month, 2014 E220 Estate, AMG trim. I looked forward to getting my 3.2 back!

All subjective... The only issue I personally had driving my EClass was that the front seats weren't fully electric... Memory seats with the orthopedic option are as comfortable as anyone could ever want. Also the E350 is the same engine as Andy already has, so he knows it's capabilities ;)

The ML350 I'm looking at next week has memory seats including steering column. Apparently interior is manual .....

I've had a Hyundai Santa Fe Premium SE auto (manuals are available too) 2012 - 2018 shape, and a brilliant vehicle. Exceptionally comfy, and a great towing vehicle. A 2.2 diesel (later ones from 2015 are Euro V1 engines), 5 year / 100k warranty too. Never any quibbles from Hyundai about any warranty issues either.
Premium SE has loads of toys, including self levelling suspension which isnt phased with a heavy trailer.
Depends if you want an SUV or saloon car. Only in a 2.2 diesel, but loads of torque. Reviews praise their towing capabilities.
I couldn't fault it.

My Tata XFR has a a torque converter 8 speed ZF auto which is silky smooth and changes gear extremely quickly. It has 500 lb ft torque so would probably make a reasonable tow car.
Only ever seen derv XF's pulling a tin tent though.

Probably because people who tow burger vans like a bit of economy.
Just been talking to the son of the chap who owns a corner shop by us. He's got a 6.3 AMG and reckons, if he puts his foot down, he gets 8mpg :o

Surely that is a contradiction in terms.
If you pull a burger van you will use far more proper fuel or lorry fuel whatever you drive. :)
-
Yes, but you get more torques for less fuel with diesel.

No such thing as fuel economy when towing ..... mine is usually around 19 to 20

A word of caution, a number of performance variants aren't type approved for towing. My father's RS6 being a case in point.
Not sure about the XFR or E63. :-\
That said I'm sure a regular 5.0v8 would do the job nicely, through the same 8 speed of unit incidentally.

As with most things, I guess cost is the primary driver. However, in some cases it's down to exhaust placement and/or suspension setup.
I agree it's a pity. And I do know some people who tow regardless with them. But if you have an accident, it's your (financial) funeral as I doubt your insurer would be interested in covering you.
-
I get 26 to the gallon when towing a twin axle elddis with the Hyundai , 30 mpg solo that's a 2.9 turbo diesel, in all honesty it drives better when towing.

I'd agree. Although for me it's 27-8 solo and. About 22-3 towing about 2.5 tonnes.
The joys of a slush box ::)

I'm off to Liverpool today and am fully expecting 55-60mpg on the motorway.
If I drive at 55mph. More like 45 when if I drive at 85.

When I picked up the Ovlov a month ago the trip computer said it was doing 55 mpg! :y It's now at 46 mpg so I assume the previous owner coasted everywhere! ;D
However a brim to brim check last week worked out at 35 mpg... :-\ Why are these trip computers so inaccurate? ??? :-\ ::)

Because the speeds are set to over read... Screws the mileage calculations ;)
Reset ALL the trips and try again, and you'll find it nearer 35mpg rather than the lifetime averages ;)

I would say they are deliberately manufactured to be 'optimistic' because manufacturers know that most people can't be arsed to do a brim to brim test.
Jag Trip computer is about 20% optimistic.
-
Yep, the manufacturer published figures are optimistic, so the readouts have to match.

Nope, the speedo is set to display over, the speed signal is actually pretty accurate :y
They are usually ok over longer journeys, its short journeys and lots of stop/start where they are not good

My astra is reading 46.5mpg. Last time I tried the brim to brim method, it worked out at around 44, so not that far out.

i'm pleasantly surprised how accurate the omega computer works out my bad petrol consumption ;D
i'm constantly varying the weight of junk ,tools etc in the boot, back seat ,passenger footwell ,any other space i can find ;D

In order to get 44 MPG out of anything a person would need to drive around like a doddery old fart......Oh hang on..... :)

If you compare just the front two rows part of the R Class with the interior ML they're not much different. The ML's boot is huge but obviously doesn't have 2 seats underneath
-
What made you give up on the R class? If you got £3.5K for it, it must have been in reasonable condition.

I'm just jealous - very nice; I had a look around them when we were at the Merc dealer looking at new Smarts originally.. I just couldn't bring myself to spend into six figures for the GL350! :)

Based on the pictures I bet it's one of those colours that changes enormously with the light? It's a nice looking monsterbarge, anyway.

Actually, it does appear brown following a second look.
BL loved this colour in the seventies and it was pretty common sight on the Austin All-aggro and Morris Marina. :)

It's strange which colors prove popular, or otherwise.
The latest 'must have' colour' in the Audi range is called Nardo grey. I think it looks the spitting image of grey primer. All my cars had patches of grey primer back in the day. :)

I think we have a whole generation that can't remember grey primer. As a boy grey cars were everywhere, usually in the form of the Austin A30/35.

VAG have some horrific colours in their current lineup...
That dark bronzy purple pearlescent is going to look the dog's goolies in some lights and complete toilet* in others, but it isn't russet, which is a far more traditional '70s colour :D
I think the ML looks a bit off because it looks like they chopped the back of the GL... shared platform from the C pillar forwards. (of course I may have that backwards in that the ML was designed and the GL had a shed bolted on the back ::))
Good choice though 8) Still made in Tuscaloosa?
*A layer of British winter and it will look like a mouldy aubergine. Keep it shiny ;)

They also have a super green (Skoda CitiGO/VW Up), Kiwi Green, that is in the running for a Cobra colour..

We had one in teardown before xmas and benchmarked it against the Disco, the general consensus was its pretty well screwed together (I assume the UK ones are not built in the far east) and that both it and the Disco looked shit from the rear ;D :y

They also have a super green (Skoda CitiGO/VW Up), Kiwi Green, that is in the running for a Cobra colour..
You really should paint that Citrine Yellow* or Sublime Green :D
*This looked a lot more fluorescent on the example in the showroom at Grays of Guildford when I did my work experience there in '94 aka when Tunnie was in training pants... ::)

The Cobra should be finished in an appropriately satanic colour. It should be Lucifer Black, just like GTM 777F.
Kiwi Green has a touch of the 'nancy boy' about it and will make people think there is a 60 BHP 1.3 litre OHV lump under the bonnet. :)

I'm with MigV6 on this in as much as I can't offhand think of a modern car that I like the look of/would buy.Having said that if it's what you want/need from a vehicle then fair play to you and I hope it serves you well. :y

Ages ago on Top Gear, Clarkson showed Audi's colour chart. It was all a variation on silver/grey
