I could be tempted, even at those prices for a late 3.2 Elite in exceptional condition, but would need to be a saloon

You don't need to pay that much for a saloon... They're much more common ;)

I'd have paid that when I was looking a couple of years ago, if it was the right car ;) I didn't pay that much but it was "Too much" according to many people's opinion ;)

It's exactly what I paid a couple of years ago .. from him (as you know, I think) ;)

Although that much stuff stopped working or wasn't working at purchase that I rather wish I hadn't, now (the aircon never worked, GPS didn't work, rocker covers needed doing very soon after purchase, wishbone went six months later, drop links started clunking) - of course I could (and should have) gone back to him for warranty fixes but being the slack oik I am, I didn't  :-[

Interesting what you say about numbers of Elite estates on the road though - no wonder there aren't many late model Elite estates with the DTi about.. only one on autotrader right now, in fact, and it's older & higher milage than my 3.2.

I was referring purely to 3.2 Elite Estates registered in 2003 ;)

My elite  2.6 was £795. 68K, years MOT, no faults. And from a dealer though I think it was his hobby rather than his career.

Although that one is sold it doesn't show what it finally went for, can't believe £4K.

In my experience RB doesn't shift an inch on his prices, otherwise I might have bought from him. Maybe that's had to change, or maybe I'm a hopeless negotiator, but I'd be surprised if he let it go for much below the asking price.

Maybe you're right, I do now recall looking at some really crap migs that were asking £1,200+.  One V6 had oil cooled spark plugs and I strongly suspect the rare leaking head gasket. Even a private sale 2.2 weakotec with blatantly bandaged mid section wanted £1K.  If you want a good mig either pay the money or look at a lot of frogs to find a bargain.

As Kev says, and others here that have viewed cars if they didn't buy. He won't budge on price. He'll fix faults, touch up marks, polish and clean. But won't shift on price.

He's way ott, IMO. But people pay his prices, so fair play to him. :)

Buying it is the easy bit, getting parts to keep it going is where the expense starts ::)

I did get £200 px for my Reflection V6 so my elite only cost £595.  The Reflection was scrapped next day, 198K, oil cooled plugs, no air con, heater not working, door strap gone,  sunroof leaking and stuck, Mot fail on O/S handbrake (that's the cost that meant she had to be put down) and track rods ends, few dents. Otherwise was still running fine, had her from new :'( :'( :'(
