No, one's adversaries is possessive(it's more of a connection than ownership) and needs the apostrophe. You're confusing apostrophes for the missing letters in contractions like you're, don't, shan't and the confusing it's which is never possessive.

The simple way to get this correct is to write it out in full - the cat sat in it is basket is clearly gibberish, and has to be its. If that's too complicated, omitting the apostrophe will be correct more often than using one, although DG's(note the possessive) sentence was one of those rare failures.
