Major water loss
« on: 17 February 2007, 17:17:50 »

Well went out to the barge today for a quick trip to Halfords in Swindon. Went to car turned key flat battery, jump started from wifes Astra. Got to halfords didn't have what I was after so started to return home. On pulling onto the A419 dual carriageway put my foot down to get past some slower cars only to look in my rear view mirror to see nothing but white smoke everywhere. The temp gauge read normwl and the car didn't cough os splutter so don't think its a head gasket. Pulled over in local industrial estate smoke still everywhere lifted bonnet to be met by more white smoke and an empty expansion tank. Soon after this a pool of hot water was forming under the car. The leak looks like its coming from the right rear of the engine(rear wheel drive so would be front right on front wheel drive). Had to catch a bus back home to collect the wifes Astra to tow the poor old barge back home.

Will be doing some diagnostic work on it tomorrow, hopefully just a burst hose.

It is true that head gasket failure is rare on the V6, but fortunately if you are sure that you had white smoke coming out of the exhaust, that isn’t a good sign….  :(

I'd say heater bypass valve. I've not had one fail but they're a common fault.

Reading it again, you didn't actually say the white smoke was coming out of the exhaust, just that it was behind the car while driving, in which case yes, HBV....

maybe it's something that's catching??  Bird flu for Omegas???

fairly similar to my coolant loss issue taz....

......

I'm off to Heathrow tomorrow to collect a complete set of pipes/./

IF they don;t turn out to be the same fault....   then I will very probably have a spare of whatever you need, including an HBV

if they turn out to be the same fault....  then we'd obviously have to obtain another......

if you could discover what it is TONIGHT, then I MIGHT be able to get one for you tomorrow when i collect my bits....

Chances of diagnosing tonight are pretty slim as I've got nowhere to carry out the work in the dark.

Not sure if the smoke was coming from exhaust as I was doing 70mph at the time so might have been coming from under the car but the steam from underbonnet and the pool of water was definately from the right rear.

Both head gaskets were changed 18 mnths ago and only 10'000

It was a bit scary at times as with no steering or braking assistance my wife was having a mare( she can't tow only had her licience for 1yr) the Astra stuggled a bit on the hills but was fine on the flat, braking was fun as well NOT.

I'll give you shout if I need anything.

Does anyone have pics of the rear of the engine showing the location of HBV and associated pipes

Does sound like HBV then....personally i would ask Max to get you HBV if he can.....if its a pipe then it would amazing coincedence that its the same pipe that has gone on Max's if it is a pipe....so spare would be available....and you could always flog the uneeded HBV or keep it as a spare???
