URGENT help needed
« on: 02 March 2007, 03:12:48 »

just bought a 2.5 GLS estate. drove ok for bout 100 miles, got to around 140mi and i got the "oil pressure light" on constantly. Pulled over almost instantly and refilled with oil (level wasnt even on the dipstick). then drove the remaining 30 mi home (albeit a bit noisily).

It appears that as the camcover gskt was done but they didnt clean the breathers so it was blowing out the next easiest outlet the filler neck.
Now today i tried re running it and found a very prominent clattering noise (like slapping two metal rulers together) not noticable at idle but VERY noticable at 2000k+  :'( been told it could be the crank shaft shells,  i really hope it isnt or it will be a new engine for it. could it be anything else? slack timing belt, oil pump, water pump?

also cant see for definate if the leak has stopped or if its coming from anywhere else  :( have a soundclip on my phone but dont know how i can host it.

help uregntly required need to get it running properly asap as i "think" the bmw's sold.

thanks

I would have thought a chatter would be more to do with hydraulic lifters?

Generally, a top-end noise will be more of a "tap" whereas a bottom end noise will be a "knock"

Probably not always the case though....

Presumably your oil level is now correct, with the correct type of oil in place? If it was chucking it out before, they may have put cheap crap in..

For the oil pressure light to come on, it must have been low.. especially if you couldn't even see it on the stick...

That does NOT sound at all nice :(

Check your timing belt tensioner isn't falling to bits.. I don't recommend running the engine at all...

Where does the noise come from? The last one I heard a bit like that was the timing belt tensioner bearing shot to bits....although I can't totally work out the WAV

To rule out ancilliaries, run it briefly without the aux belt (a few seconds most) .. But before you do that, whip the timing cover off.. check the tensioner

Remember those Cortinas & early Sierras with the OHC Pinto engine, the camshaft bearings went on those regularly, they'd drive down the road sounding exactly like that.

Not knocky enough for bottom end (for me), my money's on camshaft.

Could be a broken valve spring? (Mention that one through recent bitter experience!)

When I did my cam covers I put a plug lead on wrong, i.e. firing on 5, sounded just like this!

If it's not one of the above could it be the water pump?  Sounds very sick  :'(

UPDATE: found a new 3.0 lump for £150 good cond, 100k, no leaks, no knocks or smoke (but will do the cambelt before i drop it in) seems like the easiest and cheapest way of doing it not to mention more oomph under the right foot.

so may as well get the new 3.0 lump instead of the 2.5 thats in it...  :y
