Vauxhall's is as good as anyone elses. £4 ish a litre seems ding a dong. It's red like ATF but obviously not the same.

the oil you will need is available from Vauxhall ONLY

I don't have the part number off hand, but it comes in 1 litre bottles, and is about £4 a bottle

The gearbox takes 1.6 litres from memory (double check) - you will need 2 bottles.

It will be red in colour, PLEASE do not use anything different.

Thanks Andy, I have just  read on another forum that it takes just over a litre and it's best to drain it, refill, drive for 15-20 miles (to clean and flush ) then redrain and fill. It also states filling to 9mm below the filler hole.
Therefore I will need about 3 litres, do Vauxhall sell it in larger bottles?

Not that I know of, but you could ask. Mmm 9 mm below? As fas as I know it's a fill / level plug ie you fill it till oil starts to spill back out of the hole. Although 9 mm probably doesn't equate to that much oil I think I'd fill it right up to the fill / level plug.

They only sell in litre bottles and the part No is 93165290 and if your going to flush it you do need 3 litres :y

The Vx oil is the only stuff to use - there is no official equivalent and Vx have refined it themselves a few time to try and get the best gear change.

You need 1.2 litres.

You definitely fill to 9mm below the hole. Bent bit of wire with masking tape on it makes an adequate dipstick.

You'll probably find the old stuff in quite good shape - mine looked fine after 110,000 miles.

Recently did mine and I can confirm that you need 3 litres to cover enough for the flush and re-fill

Well worth doing as it has improved the gear change

For filling, I suggest you get youself about a metre of clear plastic pipe (sort of 10mm diameter) and a funnel.  Feed the pipe in from the engin bay into the fill hole on the side of the geabox and then carefully pour the oil in.  Access is so limited it seems to be the only way to do it.

also remeber to clean the 'fur' off the magnet on the drain plug

Another helpful hint; make sure you're able to unscrew the level/filler plug prior to draining the oil. I was just about the release the drain plug when this struck me. Took me about 3 days and a lot of broken tools to unscrew the filler plug...
After 235kkm my oil looked awful and the drain plug magnet had plenty of "fur".
I just this thing
http://www.biltema.no/products/productimage.asp?iItemId=130303
to refill oil, but hose and funnel as suggested would probably be just as good.

Very similar to the link above .. this is what I use ... for emptying before dropping the sump, and for filling after !

guys, my gearbox is very very smooth, but sometimes first thing in the morning or after its been left a while, its occasionally difficult to get it in 1st gear, so i have to put it back to Neutral once and then back to 1st and its fine,  could it be i need the oil changed in the gearbox?
i would almost certainly think it hasnt ever been changed, its a Manual by the way  :y

Wayne, If you cover fuel I will happily do your manual gearbox oil change for a few beers. The oil will cost you £8 from Vx

However, it's sooo easy to do, you really will be wasting about £30 you could otherwise spend in the pub ;)

so you want £30 for doing it mate?

or is there a maintenance guide for it?

so £30 and £8 for 3 - 4 litres?

That's a guestimate for travel costs, that's all - it may turn out less...

You only need a couple of litres.

It will literally take me ten minutes. I can soon do you a quick guide if you want one..

Easy, because someone has to pay for the steel and glass showroom and the 'free' coffee while you wait.  If you think about it, probably the most expensive way of buying coffee is using a main dealer....

I think Ill be doing a Gear Box oil change this weekend Its never been done on my manual and its a little stiff to get it into gear now and again and if its a 10 min job and costs 8 quid for the oil from VX then its gear box oil changing time.

Is the 2.0l Gear Box the same as the V6 Gear Box to change the oil ?

I don't know, but would believe so. You'll need an 8mm(?) allen key. The drain plug is self-explanatory, the level/filler plug is on the drivers side (for those with the steering wheel on the wrong side;) ) of the transmission housing.

Grey Funnel Line took me to Trondheim Fjiord loads of time in the early 80's (so the Booties could play soldier in their snow mobiles ;D  ;D). After having been sunning ourselves in the W. Indies Trondheim Fjiord in March was that cold we had to keep moving in the water to prevent us being frozen in. Beautiful place but COLD!  :y  :y

Trondheim isn't that cold, but I certainly agree on the rain. I've lived here for 10 years and it feels like it has been raining every day. It's been said that Trondheim is the only place where you can experience all four seasons in one day;-)
Snow will probably be here in a couple of weeks. Lots of fun to drive a RWD German tank then ;D

'nuff said about the weather. Go change your gear oil instead :y
