Autobox - 1,2, neutral !!!
« on: 12 June 2009, 20:19:43 »

As title, not sure if 'neutral' is 2 to3 or 3to4, anyway manual shift to third and all is ok again, until the next time.
Fluid level 'over full' after rad change, then was ok but will check again. What else will cause this problem please ???
May of found a job (after 9 months) so will need the car. regards richarda

Why the 'selector switch' as when this is used to override the 'auto select' things are ok ??

Golden rule of autobox issues:

Start with ATF change and filter clean/replace, then see how goes.

Also, keep in mind that on the meega the ATF get changed by dropping the two sumps, and only around half of the stuff get changed (~4.5L out of ~9L).

And ignore Vx 'never needs replacing' attitude towards ATF change...

Changed ATF & filter at 75k and again at 134k, used 12 litres each time to achieve 87.5% new mix. Present mileage 156k.
Could it be a sticking 2 to 3 soleniod ?

Had contact from 'Catera' owner, he suggests it could be the '2-3 solenoid' sticking, as it is something he has read can cause this problem, he has yet to find me a cure.
Is there no-one on the site with indepth experience of the '4L30-E autobox' or as Omega owners the AR25/AR35.
I could really, really do with some help please.

you have got a real can of worms here depending on the problem, ie 2-3 shift or 3-4 shift it could be either shift solenoid,or even the thrust washer on the 3-4 shift.how many miles has this tranny done?.(i once did a post mortem on the "boys"tranny and it was toast, ie no friction material left on the clutches

Sassanach, thanks for the reply. Problem is only 2rd to 3rd, sometimes ok, sometimes a 'thump' then 3rd, sometimes neutral but can overide maunually.
156k total, ATF&filter changed at 80k and 132k, problem is worse the hotter the conditions.

Up-date, pulled away pressed 'sport', 1st then 2rd then a 'light thump' 3rd and simultaneously on display 'AUTOMATIC GEARBOX CHECK' and limp mode. Switched off, after 5 minutes restarted, all back to normal. Not sure if 'paperclip test' is an good for autobox ECU ! Advise please.

i would  go with the 2-3 solenoid then which is located at the front of the rear sump, there are two side by side, the 2-3 solenoid is the one closer to the centreline of the box

'sassanach' many thanks for your reply, next week I plan to remove both sumps and clean filter and replace the ATF.
Question 1) how easy is it to get at the 2-3 solenoid ? 2) how much is a solenoid ?
