They key, I guess, is to keep the torque converter locked up, so perhaps manually select a lower gear to keep the rpm a smidge above lock up

Obviously in the absence of being allowed to blow ditheres out of the way

ZF6 and ZF8 lockup at any rpm, its dependent on throttle input more than anything 

ZF8 is more economical than the 6 due to being able to lockup in any cog (and having some extra gears)
