Having not really clicked with the Insignia, I figured it was about time I stopped dicking about, and bought a proper car ::)

Namely this...

It's only a 220CDI, but the first owner didn't shy away from the options list...
Full leather, heated all round
COMMAND
Larger fuel tank
Parktronic, front and rear
Retractable tow bar
Bi Xenons, with dynamic beam assist

Several nice touches with the way things work, such as cruise control activating the brakes if you press Resume at a higher speed than it's set at 8)

Early days, but economy is looking better than the Insignia, inspite of being an auto. The rest of the car puts it to shame. Boot is about a fifth larger than the Omega as well, so looking like most boxes ticked. Hope to get a few years out of it :y

You and me both :y Although that was a different car... My first enquiry on this particular car was last Saturday, deal done on Tuesday and collected yesterday. Off to the council in the morning, then it gets to earn its keep :y

Been a long week though ;D

Very nice Al.

Very nice, a quality car, and looks like the E220 blue efficiency - which is a great choice.

Hope you enjoy it, the old Omega has a true successor with these German tanks!

Very nice, MotherT has been looking at these as an upgrade from her C220 CDi.

For 220, it does shift, but she has said if she gets an E, has to be 350  :o

Everyone is at the Mercs now, MrsT's Father just got himself a new E250, FatherT has been eyeing up the coupe versions too  ::)

Must admit, that age/shape E Estates are good looking beasts, are you going to be doing any DIY work on it?

I'll be very interested to hear what mileage Al gets out of a gallon of liquid dinosaur - I reckon his use probably closely mirrors my regular commuting use.. or to put it another way, I always get appalling mpg out of my cars compared to everyone else (TB & Chris aside ;D) and as a taxi Al seemed to get appalling mpg...

Ahh another digital throttle driver, it's either on or off  ;D ;D ;D

MotherT's C220 CDi gets 50/52, however that is mostly long runs with little bit of town work.

When I was looking at these though, the E350 was not far off in MPG, only couple of mpg in it. Like Omega 4 pot to V6 really.

Although the E350's do appear to have quite a price premium on the 2's  :-\

Shall report back with mpg after the weekend, reset the computer when I collected it, currently 43.1mpg over 375 miles...

Since start this morning, 33.7mpg over 14 miles including idling through its mechanical inspection... Tbh if it gets anywhere near the official urban figure I will be happy :y

Nah, far from it really .. but I can never seem to eek the kind of mpg out of cars that some do; of course maybe I always buy pups .. that might explain it!  For instance I get ~21mpg around town in the Elite and ~28mpg on a long run at 8070, I've seen others report numbers I can only dream of ;D

Although the M3 only gets ~17mpg around town and on the commute.. I do tend to drive that one a little harder!

About the same as my 3.2, in fact I've only ever seen 28/30 on a motorway run, and that was only after I'd zero'd the display.  :)
I do get the figures you dream of out of the Beemer though.  :y :)

Only an issue if you fail to clean up properly Mr Opti... I tend to strip the affected area and clean every item individually. I can't stand the smell of the stuff, so a quick wipe with a sticky tissue just doesn't cut it IMHO :y

Mind you, Al.......the said BIL worked nights for many years, picking up 'pissed up' girls and boys from the clubs at 3 in the morning.

He certainly had his fair share of 'runners' to contend with. :-\

Well, after two busy nights in town, the fuel economy seems to be consistent...

Trip computer has two modes: Since Reset and Since Start, the latter essentially a current day one.

I reset it in Sheffield on Wednesday, now showing 700ish miles at an average of 37.8mpg.
The day to day figures were 31.4 for Friday and 31.8 for Saturday, so 31-32 is looking like its working average, which given that it's an auto, a large car, and doing alot of stop start work, I don't think it's too bad. A mate has had one for six months now, and his does about 31 around town, so mine seems typical :y

Pretty good for a 170 bhp auto in a heavy ish car :y

Agreed. :y

I'm unsure as to how accurate most trip computers are.,......but I imagine that most manufacturers like to be 'optimistic' ::) ::) with the truth.

Having said that, when I performed a 'brim to brim' test on the Omega it was pretty accurate.......within about 2%. :y :y

Fabulous car, Mr Al. :y :y :y

Bung me the extra £8k and I'll consider it ;D

Besides, mine is better equipped than both the 350s I looked at :y

Very Nice.  :y :y :y

E-Series Merc, seems to be the way to go as it is the only Omega Estate replacement available.

Lovely car  :y

I'm in the same boat. Need a big reliable estate, I can't justify keeping a 3.2 MV6 jst as a hobby, I do a lot of miles and a car need to earn it's keep.

Also been considering XC70 Volvo . . . . . hmmmmmm    :-\       :-\

 . . . . if only the MV6 was half its age

They do appear to go for a lot more, odd when it's just a bigger engine really  :-\

For The Volvo XC70 is a large estate car with a modicum of off-road ability. The cabin is comfortable, and built to a very high standard. Standard equipment is generous.

Against The XC70's ride is choppy around town, while the steering is vague and the engines feel dated. The boot is rather shallow, too.

Thats what What Car said about the Volvo  :(
