Poor start up
« on: 14 July 2010, 12:54:24 »

Hi all, Please help :-[ over the last 4 weeks the mig seems to be getting worse, from cold start up its like its only firing on three pistons, and it sounds very hollow through the air filter box then all of a sudden after about 30 secs the hollow noise stops then its back to running normal, and also noticed the last 4 weeks that the tick over has become very low it normally ticks over at about 900 rpm but it has dropped to about 700 rpm any ideas please, thanks
Tim

Low tickover (although 700 doesn't sound too low to me?) on the 2.0 is often associated with blocked breathers and/or Idle Air control Valve. Here's an excellent guide by 'Grumpy' on how to sort out such troubles:

The running on 3 for a short while could be a few things.  Inspect your spark plugs as a first step, see if there's one that looks different to the others, checking both the 'business end' and the ceramic insulator on the HT-lead end (looking for black marks that may be evidence of tracking of the spark).

You may find oil and/or water in the plugwells, which would not be helping matters.

I trust you aren't loosing any coolant?
