For what its worth, I have actually found a workable solution to this

Get on the Bay of E and pick up an old Harmon Kardon Drive and play unit - they are getting a  bit old now, but there are still a few new ones kicking around for about £40 or so. It has AUX in, and full iPod controls - works pretty well.

It has the option of a hard wired FM modulator, which whilst not great, is better than nothing, and will give you some decent tunes on your head unit if you tune the radio in to it. BOSE owners will be more than happy with the sound.

Now, this is where Modulators and the Omega do not usually work.

The FM aerial in the Omega is piss poor, and it struggles to give a strong enough signal to the poor quality tuner inside the original radio. Adding an extra few joints and a modulator in line with the aerial cable are usually enough to kill the radio signal strength completely, and most find that whilst the modulator plays the MP3 tunes, its at the expense of being able to listen to the radio ever again.

The solution is to fit an EXTERNAL FM AERIAL to the roof instead of the crappy thing stuck to the window. Even if you have an existing aerial on the roof, then you will need to replace it for this to work. Use either a BOSCH or HISRCHMANN fully amplified beesting aerial, and a tip here is that AUDI ones are cheaper than GM and have the same upright mounting angle - VW ones are more swept back and there is no problem using those if needed. If you use the telematics, then select the correct aftermarket aerial that has the dual/tri/GSM/GPS configuration for your needs. When new aerial is fitted - DO NOT USE ORIGINAL CABLES as these are poor also. Run a new aerial cable from the Aerial to the Modulator, along roof and down O/S A post to the Modulator in centre console, and to the back of the radio. The replacement aerial will require a 12V feed to its base, and there is no problem connecting this to the little spade connector that you unplugged from the old Vx one.

Just to add

We have tried other modulator kits with zero success, and tried existing cables with zero success

So far, the combination as suggested above has worked every single time without fail

Hope this helps

Good explanation -  I have encountered Mirrorlink many times, just didn`t know Apple had their own name for their version

the term "Political History" tells me everything I needed to know   :y :y

As car audio man, I'm surprised that this.  ???

Yeah, but I play with Car Audio, not poor quality compressed music streamed by a badly made phone   ;)
Not a fan then Dave... :D

What gives you that idea

FYI - the only "Approved" manufacturers to use "Apple Car Play" are Alpine, Pioneer and Kenwood - none of which have a single din unit available

Is there a particular app you have in mind - I must admit that I use GLYMPSE most of the time in mine, and really handy to see it on the car screen as well as the phone

Played with Apps though - lots of the new cars have them  ;)

What car is it going into then if single din is the only option?

Ok, if wanting to use "apps" on your stereo, then its unlikely that you will find a touch screen that can support them in a single DIN size as the screen area is just not big enough for fat fingers. Only suggestion I can think of is a pop out monitor, and even then you are going to struggle as many companies have stopped making those too.

Alpine, I think, still make a pop out single DIN monitor, but by the time you add all the extra modules and leads to make it work, you have priced yourself out of the running - Clarion still have quite a back catalogue of pop out monitors, but not sure whether they are compatible for the apps you are wanting to run.

Have a look at their website here to see if there are any contenders, and if you need any technical help with a specific model, then give me a yell and I`ll see how I can help

Just to add, that helpful forums like this one are here to explain things, and thrive on questions being asked

No matter how silly you feel your question is, the guys here will always try their best to answer it.

If I may my 2 cents also . .

Don`t bother trying to measure battery drain with a conventional multimeter - yes, it can be done, but its such an arseache to connect things properly without blowing the internal fuse that you will give up long before you have solved it. Get yourself a cheap Clampmeter, its much easier to use. There are some china cheapies around the £20 mark, but I would suggest to spend a bit extra - £30 and get one of these, as its sensitive enough to do what you are trying to do

Good luck with it, and let us know your findings

From your description, I would be looking for either a damaged speaker or a trapped speaker wire to earth

What can sometimes help with diagnosis is to connect a large light bulb (e.g. a headlight bulb) in place of the fuse. Turn on the ignition, and it'll probably glow dimly. Then pull the wiring around a bit and see if it lights up full brightness. If it does, you've found the short.

Not heard that one before, but thats quite clever   :y

Sounds like aerial has failed  -  should be a menu on there somewhere to show how many sats you are receiving - my guess is zero
