2.5 TD guidance
« on: 22 October 2011, 22:10:44 »

Off to look at a '96 2.5 TD manual for a colleagues son.

Apart from the usual bushes, HBV and rusty doors, what issues are there with the engines?

Never had a diseasel Omega before, so just need a pointer to obvious probs.

TIA, Al.

Hear it start from cold and so long as it goes splendid and dont smoke/rattle...

Regular oil changes were a priority for me when I was after one, I thinks any issues to worry about would give obvious enough signs. Leaky injectors and a noisy bottom pulley (which broke and was NOT cheap for a new one) were about my biggest concearns engine wise..

Also, see how the clutch feels.. I had a new one on my estate but the one fitted wasn't quite the right one- I had lots of problems with that one! But only because I let monkeys fit it.

I'd say they're bombproof enough so long as the turbo hasn't been wound up lots lol, all in all a fairly solid lump. I'm sure people know more about them than this but, If you be vigilant of the usual common practice things with a car, you wouldn't go far wrong.

Check engine mounts??

So long as the lump's been correctly serviced, it'll easily amass inter-galactic mileages :y

Common niggles are pretty well covered as above.
Give it the beans, and listen very carefully for any rattling whilst on over-run/not under load. Rattling under these conditions usually points to worn timing chains/guides/tensioners. Avoid rotating the engine counter-clockwise, as this can also cause problems in this area.

Performance is far from exhiliarating, though should be acceptable.
The lump has to be constantly kept 'on song' and is reasonably economical on juice.

A good TD should serve you well! :y

Thanks again for the replies.

Didn't see the car in the end as the buyer didn't want to ask the seller  for a ten mile roundtrip or a test drive. I offered to pop down instead. Response I got was a text saying 'If I buy it then I'll run it down and you can tell me if I've made a mistake lol'.

FFS  wouldn't even answer phone for pointers on what to look for, only texts. GGGRRRR. Hopefully he's paid top money for a complete shytter.

Thanks again for replies. Al. (thumbs up smiley).
