Mark has provided a section on the VIN here.

You should find what you're looking for in that post.  :y

Sounds like a dodgy selector switch to me.  ::)

Resetting probably would appear to make a difference because you'd be holding the selector in to program the roof, perhaps freeing off those sticky/dirty contacts whilst doing so.

I'm saying nothing.  :-X

What Laidback says though does sound like sense.

The weight loss/gain from the reduced trim specification level is offset by the bootfull of signs, cones, stinger, brushes, shovels, lights, first aid kit, crowbars, measuring tapes, handlamps, maps, specific paperwork etc etc that is carried.

What, No doughnuts?  ;D

Could it not be the sounder back up battery?

Nope, the main battery should power the horns until it goes dead, that's when the back up battery comes in, only when the main power fails, either by charge running down or by disconnection (tampering).

You're right Kev.

Sadly, I've just been out to see if this is true.

And yes it is!  If the doors are locked, it won't pop at all.

That's a good point.  Thanks.

Now if only a mod could add that bit to the end of my write-up.
I prefer it like that anyway.

Besides, someone would usually be getting into or out of the car at the time you're 'popping' so it's not a problem cos you'd have the doors unlocked anyway.

Just gives it that bit of security when you're flying down the M6.   ;)

Thanks Mark.

When I found the right part of the circuit diagram, it was obvious.

Don't worry about the lack of delay.  I've not, as yet, accidentally popped it and I can assure you, it's absolutely fantastic (getting a bit excited) being able to pop it with the key in and engine running......Oh how the boring evenings just fly by now, me and the missus take it in turns to pop the boot with the key in.
Oh, how we laugh!
;D

Just for the record, and if you're still concerned about safety, it won't pop if your doors are locked.

My Clifford AG5 locks the doors automatically once i'm moving by monitoring the RPM signal (BlackJax anti hijack feature), so there's no chance of it popping accidentally.  :)

But it truly is great being able to 'pop it' without having to first kill the engine.

I've used 4 Allen keys in the past with the ball ends on.

Worked a charm.  [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

hmmm ... just tried pulling F26 on mine, then turning on ignition and sidelights - number plate light not lit, but gear selector indicator is. So it's unlikely to be that, as the number plate light works fine when F26 is replaced.

Adjusting the instrument panel illumination dimmer made the LEDs glow less brightly - but not go out completely. Are the rest of the dashboard and climate control lights working? (I assume so ....)
Every other light works it's just the gear selector that goes out as soon as you turn on the headlights, turn them of again and the selector light come's on :-/
I'll get a look at this when you're up the road at the weekend Jim. I've had some further thoughts on it and there's a few things i'd like to check out with the "Fluke".  ;)

Jim, you're saying that when you turn on the lights, the gear position lamp goes abnormally dim or off?
And no other lights affected?
It goes off. Completely blank. Turn off the lights and on it comes again.

I thought he was taking the piss at first, but sure enough, that's what happens.  :-?

** EDIT ** I would have looked at the schematic myself, but as Jim's took his own Haynes manual back i can't help.  ;)
