Omega General Help / Re: steam
« on: 22 March 2008, 01:00:58 »
mmmm....

more efficient combustion = more steam??? not sure about that - maybe I'll have to go through my old text books, but that doesn't sound right at first glance.  It would suggest that we'd see more steam (OK water vapour) coming from the exhaust of a new Japanese supermini than out of an old 3 litre Capri - I just don't think that's the case.

I'm afraid my experience of owning cars with lots of steam coming from the exhaust has been because coolant was getting into the combustion chambers.

As Markey-Kark says, though, it should clear up once the engine and entire exhaust system is hot.  But I would keep a close eye on your coolant level for now.

New cylinder? - sounds like it to me.  Maybe one for the ignition as well (though they tend to call them barrels - no idea why they're not also cylinders).

P.S. Go on - tell us how many miles she's done - that might help diagnose the likely cause - I'm guessing around 200k ?

Others here will tell you whether they think it needs a new HG.

But if it does, Vauxhall main dealer rate is just under £600 (including a courtesy car), so you might want to consider that.

You might also consider getting the cambelt changed while it's all apart, as it should be cheaper to get it done at the same time if it's due fairly soon anyway.

Omega General Help / Re: Spare Wheel size
« on: 14 March 2008, 22:01:39 »
Well dang me sideways :o

I really should have got offf my back-side before posting, shouldn't I!

I can now admit that my spare is a 15" but I thought I'd just been shafted by the guy who sold it to me 'cos it was all he could find at a scrap yard, having lost/damaged the proper spare.

Yet again, I bow to the superior knowledge of you guys.  I wonder if there are any other cars out there like this??? (apart from those with a proper  'space-saver', obviously).

Sorry ... I can't believe I just wrote that instead of their - I think I've beenreading too many blogs on tinterweb and it's addled my brain.  Either that or I've got old-timers disease.

??  So if you have to use the spare, you're running 3 wheels/tyres of one size and one of another?? Shurely shome mishtake.

But if that's correct and acceptable (with no warning like you get on space-saver tyres) then why do people take so much care about getting exactly matching tyre sizes, profility (is there such a word - there is now), makes and even tread patterns.

Without getting off my back-side and going to get my manual, I'm sure it doesn't mention to owners not to worry when they discover that there spare looks wrong.

Omega General Help / Re: Dashboard reflection in screen!!!!
« on: 06 March 2008, 20:39:06 »
Tinting the screen won't help - you want maximum light coming through from the outside.

I can't decide if leaving the screen grimy on the inside would help or hinder :-/

How about some black furry self-adhesive stuff that sports shops used to sell to wrap around handles of tennis/table tennis bats. Try draping a dark towel on top of the dash first, to see if the furry stuff might help.

I think this can also happen if one of the door catches is not adjusted correctly, but I would try what the other guys suggest first - sounds like they're more experienced than I am.

Although the rear one doesn't go off with the ignition, I think it goes off after some time (20 minutes?).  But I also think it comes on when you open the doors with the remote, so it makes you think it has been on all the time!!!!

You have my sympathies on the HBV issue and your approach to getting it sorted... we can't all do everything ourselves, for a variety of reasons.

Anyway - a 528, eh? I had one for 8 yrs before I got my Omega- have you been onto the Unofficial BMW owners forum? - sorry I'm no good at links but it's at

www.unofficialbmw.com

you might find it helpful

Omega General Help / Re: Facelift Cabin Heat or lack of (again)
« on: 05 February 2008, 00:57:28 »
Been there over the last few months.

The heated seats do help, don't they.  But it's weird driving along and being able to see your breath inside the car, on a cold morning.

Can't help a lot more, but once I'd pulled the collars back (towards the front of the car) I was pleasantly surprised at how easily the hoses came off. Maybe you're just being too gentle?  And I think you really do need to remove them both to get the matrix flushed through.  I flushed mine a few times both ways.  But now, after a few weeks I think it needs doing again, as the heat has gone back to warm (though much better than cold!). I guess there was still some debris that is working its way around the system.

Just a thought, if you can get the hoses warm, that might help - maybe a kettle of hot water to help get the rubber a bit more pliable?

Good luck!

I guess I would agree - surely Trade Club means a financial arrangement, not cheap and nasty quality.  ie not the same as 'trade' paint, which IS different.
